Chapter 458:
“I never wanted to hurt him…” A violent cough shook my body, each breath tearing painfully through my damaged lungs. “I’d rather… I’d rather be the one suffering. Frank, I just need to wait until he wakes. As long as he’s safe, I’ll leave immediately and never stand before him again.”
“You’re burning up, Lianne.” Frank pressed a hand against my forehead. “Your fever is dangerously high. Without a wolf’s healing ability, an infection like this could kill you!”
His hands tightened on my shoulders as he said, “Think about Ruby! Think about Silas! They’re waiting for you at home! If something happens to you, what will become of them? Do you really want them to grow up without their mother?”
The moment he mentioned my children, my heart trembled.
My vision blurred, and Frank’s figure seemed to split into several overlapping images.
The fever washed away what little clarity I had left. My body burned with heat while an unbearable cold settled deep inside my bones.
The only thing keeping me conscious was waiting for news about Ethan.
After a long silence, I finally whispered, “Ruby… how is she?”

“She’s okay, Lianne. Noah brought her home himself. Other than being frightened, she’s completely unharmed. Silas has been staying with her,” Frank replied softly. He crouched beside me, placing his broad, warm hand against my forehead. Worry filled his eyes. “Your children are waiting for you. You can’t keep destroying yourself like this.”
Knowing my children were safe eased a small part of the burden weighing on my heart.
But it was quickly replaced by crushing guilt.
I had failed as a mother. Ruby had gone through such a horrifying ordeal because of me, and yet here I was in this desolate wilderness, tormenting myself over a man who had shattered me — only to end up saving my life.
“I’m sorry…” I closed my eyes weakly. Tears blended with the cold rain and streamed down my cheeks. “Please take care of them for me.”
“Come back with me, Lianne,” Frank pleaded again. “Look at the state you’re in. Your wounds have been soaked by rain for days, your fever hasn’t broken, and your wolf is still asleep. If you keep pushing yourself, your body will collapse. Staying here won’t change anything. The Thorn Pack isn’t going to let you inside.”
I stubbornly shook my head once more. My teeth chattered uncontrollably from the cold, yet I refused to give in.
“In the past… Ethan was always the one watching over me.” Each breath was a battle, every gasp stoking the blazing pain deep in my chest. “He stepped in front of Ivy’s blade for me… Frank, I can’t just leave while he’s clinging to life. Even if I’m powerless to help, even if all I can do is stand in the rain waiting for word of him, at least that’s one small thing I can give back.”
Frank stared at the stubborn determination on my face and let out a weary sigh.
He knew me too well. Once I made a decision, I would never turn back, even if it destroyed me.
