Chapter 497:
But as I drew closer and caught sight of the slightly open collar of his hospital gown, my smile faltered.
Fresh gauze covered his chest, and along the edges was a faint stain of blood that hadn’t fully dried. My heart immediately tightened.
“Why was your dressing changed again? Didn’t Melisa just treat your wound earlier?” I asked.
Unease flooded through me as I instinctively reached toward his chest.
Before I could touch him, Ethan caught my hand and gently but firmly pulled me closer.
“I accidentally bumped into some equipment earlier,” he replied casually, his deep voice carrying an almost deliberate nonchalance. “It’s nothing serious. Stop worrying about those ugly wounds and close your eyes for a second.”
I blinked at him in confusion. “What are you up to?”

“Just trust me and close them.” Something flickered in his eyes, an emotion I couldn’t quite identify.
After a brief hesitation, I obeyed and shut my eyes.
A delicate fragrance drifted toward me. It wasn’t rich or intoxicating like roses. Instead, it was pure and clean, carrying a strange serenity that seemed to seep straight into my soul.
“You can open them now.”
I slowly lifted my eyelids. Resting on my lap was a flawless white flower, its petals faintly outlined with a silvery glow beneath the light. A moonflower.
According to werewolf legend, moonflowers were formed from the tears of the Moon Goddess and symbolized a love that would never fade.
“This is a moonflower.” Ethan’s eyes never left mine. One hand slipped behind my neck, drawing me closer until I could feel the warmth of his breath. “Lianne, take this flower and promise me something.” His voice softened. “Promise me you’ll never leave me again.”
My heart instantly thought of the moonflower I had picked for him in the garden the day before, the one I still hadn’t found the courage to give him. Warmth spread through my chest.
I accepted the flower, my fingertips trembling slightly. For a brief moment, I simply basked in the happiness of being cherished by him. But then reality crashed back in.
The fragile future waiting ahead of us turned that warmth cold almost instantly.
I looked at him seriously and spoke in a soft voice. “As long as you focus on recovering and stop making me worry, I’ll promise you.”
The tenderness in Ethan’s expression disappeared. His gaze turned sharp, almost frighteningly serious, as though it could see through every layer of disguise I wore.
“Lianne,” he said quietly, “how much longer were you planning to keep this from me?”
My body stiffened. The smile lingering on my lips froze completely.
“You struck a deal with my family, didn’t you?” His voice cut through the fragile fantasy I’d been desperately clinging to. Beneath the composed surface churned a tempest of barely contained fury and pain. “You agreed to hand Silas and Ruby back to the pack in exchange for the right to stay by my side.”
The moment the truth left his mouth, every defense I had built crumbled.
