Chapter 498:
Looking at the pain and fury in his eyes, I could only force myself to remain calm. My nails dug deeply into my palm as I struggled to steady my emotions.
“I didn’t agree just so I could stay with you,” I said after taking a slow breath, forcing myself to meet his gaze. “Ethan, you’re the Alpha. Our children carry your pure bloodline. If they stay with me, they’ll spend their entire lives hiding and running. But if they return to the Thorn Pack, they’ll have opportunities, protection, and a future worthy of them.”
“Do you really believe that?” Ethan’s eyes flashed crimson with emotion. His voice shook with barely restrained pain. “Can you honestly tell me you’re willing to let them go? Do you think I don’t know how much they mean to you?” His gaze locked onto mine. “Lianne, when those people cornered you… when you carried all of this alone and forced yourself to compromise…” His voice grew rough. “Did it ever occur to you that seeing you suffer hurts me just as much?”
In front of him, every excuse and defense I had carefully built felt laughably fragile, collapsing like sandcastles before a rising tide.
I didn’t dare argue any further. I was terrified that if I stayed one second longer, I would completely lose control and break down in his arms.
More than that, I was afraid continuing this conversation would only aggravate his already serious injuries.

“I’m tired. I need to see Melisa and have my bandages changed,” I said quickly, seizing the excuse as a lifeline.
Before he could stop me, I slipped out of his embrace and fled the room in a flustered state.
The corridor was flooded with harsh white light.
When I reached Melisa’s office, I lifted my hand to knock, only to freeze when Rola’s voice drifted through the door.
“Melisa, I’ve watched you grow up.” Rola’s voice carried a warmth, a fondness she had never once shown me. “Your bloodline is exceptional, and your abilities are among the very best. If you became Ethan’s mate and the Luna of the Thorn Pack, I could finally feel at ease.”
My hand remained suspended in midair. The words struck me like a heavy blow to the chest.
Instinctively, I stepped back and slipped into an empty room nearby.
Sadness washed over me. The woman who had once treated me like family, who had cared for me with such warmth and affection, now regarded me as an obstacle. She couldn’t wait to find someone else to take my place beside Ethan.
Yet, at the same time, I understood her reasoning.
The Thorn Pack’s Alpha couldn’t lose control over a woman, least of all someone as broken and worthless as me.
Only after Rola’s footsteps faded into the distance did I finally gather myself and walk back to Melisa’s office.
I pretended I hadn’t overheard anything. The last thing I wanted was to make kind-hearted Melisa uncomfortable.
“Ms. Riley, you’re here at the perfect time,” Melisa said as she crouched down and carefully treated the wound on my left leg.
