Chapter 506:
His gaze settled on me, steady and unwavering, carrying the weight of a promise. “Next winter, at the first snowfall in Gelidmark, I’ll bring you to the cathedral. We’ll settle in for a while, a quiet retreat for no one but us.”
My entire body went rigid. The longing that had warmed my heart only moments ago instantly curdled into pain, like countless tiny needles piercing through my chest.
Thiynia’s current winter hadn’t even ended yet, but I already knew my time with him was running out. Less than a month. That was all I had left.
We were never going to make it to next winter. And his promised snow? It would fall on a world I’d no longer be part of.
“Okay,” I replied with a bright smile I had to force into existence. “Then don’t you dare break your promise.”
“I won’t.” His answer came without hesitation. Looking directly into my eyes, he added with absolute conviction, “Lianne, I will take you there. No matter what.”
The certainty in his voice nearly shattered me. My chest tightened painfully. Emotion clogged my throat until I couldn’t speak at all.
I trusted him completely. Every word he spoke, every promise he made, I knew he meant it all. But I also knew, with crushing certainty, that there was an unbridgeable distance between us.
My eyes stung with unshed tears. I shot to my feet, scrambling for a pathetic excuse. “I… I need to go wash my face. I’m still not fully awake.”
Without waiting for a response, I hurried into the bathroom. The moment the door closed behind me, I turned on the faucet and splashed cold water across my face. Droplets slid down my cheeks and dripped into the sink.
When I finally looked up, the woman staring back from the mirror had reddened eyes and a fragile smile that looked ready to break at any moment.

A bitter laugh escaped me. How foolish. How utterly foolish of me to let myself hope again.
Everything Ethan had given me over the past few days, his tenderness, his devotion, his promises, felt like a beautiful dream borrowed from fate. And borrowed things always had to be returned.
Lianne’s POV:
By the time I finally steadied my emotions and came out of the bathroom, Melisa was already in the room, medical kit in hand.
“Alpha, it’s time to examine your wounds.” Melisa’s voice remained calm and professional as always.
I quietly stood by the doorway, unwilling to interrupt.
From my position, I could see Melisa beside the bed, carefully conducting the examination while instructing Ethan to cooperate.
Her expression was serious, yet there was an unspoken understanding in her voice, something only people from the same world could truly share.
What caught me even more off guard was Ethan’s reaction. Ethan, who was usually distant and stubborn, was surprisingly cooperative around Melisa.
As I watched the two of them together, an unfamiliar sense of inadequacy surged within me, impossible to ignore.
Melisa was remarkable in every way. She was intelligent and kind, her family stood on equal footing with Ethan’s, and most importantly, she possessed the powerful bloodline of a witch. In a life-or-death situation, she could save him.
