Chapter 527:
Panic struck me immediately. Unable to meet his gaze, I focused on shuffling the papers scattered across the table. “You’re reading too much into it,” I said quickly. “You’re still recovering from your injuries. Why are you even thinking about that right now? Your health should come first.”
“You’ve avoided answering this more than once. And don’t use my injury as an excuse.” He reached for me and pulled me closer. The warmth of his breath brushed against my skin. “Do you want Ruby and Silas to grow up in a family that’s never truly complete? Or are you planning to keep me by your side forever without ever giving me the place I deserve?”
“I… I just think everything is happening too fast.” I scrambled for an excuse, hoping I could somehow talk my way out of the situation. “We’ve both been through a lot. Maybe we need more time to adjust before making such a big decision.”
“Look at me,” he ordered, clearly restraining his anger.

I couldn’t stand the way he was looking at me. It felt as though his eyes could reach straight into the deepest part of me, exposing every secret I was trying to keep hidden. I jumped to my feet and seized the first excuse that came to mind. “Oh, right. Melisa mentioned she might need to adjust one of your medications. I’ll go ask her about it.”
Without giving him a chance to respond, and ignoring him as he called after me, I rushed toward the door and out of the room.
The door slammed shut behind me.
I pressed my back against the cold hallway wall, breathing heavily. My palms were damp with sweat.
Once again, I had managed to escape. I felt great relief.
But more than anyone else, I understood that I couldn’t keep avoiding this forever.
I didn’t dare give Ethan hope, and I didn’t dare dream about a future with him.
From the very beginning, I had known that our story was never meant to reach a happy ending.
I knew exactly how it felt to place my faith in a future with Ethan, only to watch that future taken from me by the very person I loved most.
The hurt left behind by that kind of betrayal was unbearable. I couldn’t bear the thought of Ethan suffering through the same pain.
Lost in my thoughts, I wandered out of the hospital building.
The air in Thiynia carried the familiar cool scent of damp earth and woods. In the distance, a vast expanse of ancient woodland stretched toward the horizon. Beyond those trees lay the territory of the pack.
I found an empty bench and sat down. I drew in a slow breath, trying to calm the pain in my heart.
Recently, Ethan had been acting differently. It was almost as if he had sensed that something was wrong. Again and again, he tested my reactions, bringing up the bonding ceremony whenever he had the chance.
The more openly he showed his feelings, the more frightened I became.
Only a few days had passed since the one-month deadline I had agreed upon with Adrian began.
