Chapter 529:
By every measure, she seemed far more worthy than I was to stand beside Ethan as his Luna.
But when I looked into her clear, honest eyes, I didn’t feel even slightly jealous.
There was no hidden agenda behind her words of admiration. She respected Ethan for who he was. More importantly, she genuinely wished for our happiness.
“You two have to stay happy,” she said as she rose to her feet and gave me a playful wink. “Don’t destroy the faith in love I only recently gained. Otherwise, I might actually spend my entire life surrounded by herbs and nothing else.”
Only then did she seem to realize something was wrong with me. “Did you and the Alpha have an argument?” she asked carefully.
I shook my head and smiled bitterly. “No.”
I wasn’t going to fight with him anymore.
There wasn’t enough time left. I wouldn’t waste it on quarrels, resentment, or cold silence.
As I watched Melisa walk away, my thoughts gradually became clear.
If Ethan truly needed a Luna after I was gone… if he truly needed someone to help him start over…

Then perhaps Melisa was the woman who could remain by his side for the rest of his life.
By the time I returned to the hospital room, it was completely dark out.
The room was pitch-black. I quietly pushed the door open, trying not to make a sound. But before I could reach for the switch, a warm hand suddenly wrapped around my wrist.
A powerful force pulled me forward. In the next instant, I slammed into a firm, solid chest.
Ethan’s lips crashed onto mine fiercely.
His breath was hot, and he was relentless as he claimed every bit of air from my lungs. Occasionally, his teeth brushed against my lower lip, sending a faint sting through me.
He was angry. This was his way of punishing me for avoiding him, the most instinctive and possessive way he knew.
“Ethan…” I murmured.
He pressed me against the door, and the darkness only heightened every sensation we felt.
I could feel his warm breath brushing across my skin. I could hear the strong rhythm of his quickened heartbeat.
I wanted to push him away. But the moment I remembered the injury he was still recovering from, my hands went weak. I could only rest them lightly on his shoulders.
“Don’t run from me anymore,” he whispered against my lips. “Lianne, what are you so afraid of?”
The nearness of him left my entire body weak, and even my voice shook as I answered, “Let me go first… you’ll reopen your wound. Please…”
The plea in my voice gradually eased the anger raging inside him.
Ethan finally stopped. Yet he still refused to let go of me. He lowered his head into the crook of my neck and wrapped his arms around me even tighter.
The room remained silent and dark. Only our uneven breathing filled the space.
