Chapter 575:
Not once had I believed he betrayed me. Seeing him like this made my chest tighten painfully.
“Ethan, have you completely lost your senses?” I caught hold of his sleeve, tears burning behind my eyes. “You’re still recovering. The doctor warned you to avoid cold weather and stay rested, yet you’re standing here smoking nonstop. What exactly are you doing to yourself?”
A faint trace of bitterness crossed his face, though he still pulled away from my hand. “Don’t touch me. You’ll end up smelling like smoke.”
“I don’t care,” I snapped, gripping his arm harder when he tried to withdraw.
I searched his expression, trying to break through the wall he always hid behind. “Are you upset because I stopped you from visiting my father’s grave? Is that why you’ve been standing here all night? Since when did you start acting this immature?”
He offered no reply. Only a deep exhale escaped him, heavy enough to sound like it carried years of pain.

Instead of answering, he removed his dark coat and wrapped it carefully around me. His palm settled gently against the back of my head while he spoke in a low voice. “Let’s go home. It’s freezing out here.”
The ride back felt unbearably tense.
I kept both hands tight around the steering wheel while stealing occasional glances at him resting against the passenger seat with his eyes shut. Every flash of light from the passing roads sharpened the strong lines of his face.
Then I suddenly remembered the Maybach speeding away from the cemetery that morning.
Everything became painfully clear.
He had known about my injured ankle. He had seen Frank helping me down the slope.
He had been there all along, forced to watch his own mate lean on another man for support. Yet because of the promises he’d given me, he endured the entire thing in silence, suffering by himself at the bottom of the hill.
I wanted to explain. I wanted to tell him there had never been anything between Frank and me. But every possible explanation felt empty before it could even leave my mouth.
And the real reason I refused to let him visit my father remained the one truth I could never reveal.
Ethan hadn’t said a word even after we got back to the villa.
He headed directly for the bathroom, and the sound of water continued for what felt like forever.
After changing into my nightdress, I sat quietly on the bed just as the bathroom door finally opened.
Ethan stepped out wearing only a towel around his waist. Water still clung to his hair, sliding slowly over his chest before disappearing along the uneven scar carved across his skin.
The ceiling light stayed off. Only the faint glow from a wall lamp illuminated him, making him appear almost unreal, like a warrior emerging from the shadows with an overwhelming presence that filled the room.
Without warning, he crossed the distance between us and pushed me back against the mattress.
