Chapter 577:
I remained frozen against the sheets, my satin nightdress twisted carelessly from his touch. His lingering warmth still clung to my skin, yet inside me something felt painfully empty, as though a vital piece had been torn away.
I never intended to give myself to Ethan as compensation.
I was simply terrified. Terrified he would notice the uncertainty hiding inside me. Terrified he would realize I had been searching for answers tied to secrets involving his family.
In that moment, all I truly wanted was him. I wanted to calm the jealousy and suspicion raging inside him with nothing more than my closeness.
But Ethan understood me too well. My weak attempt at distraction had been exposed instantly.
Beyond the bathroom door, water rushed steadily through the pipes, the sound strangely sharp against the silence surrounding us.
I sat upright without switching on the lamp, perched quietly at the edge of the mattress while darkness swallowed the room around me.
I had no idea how long I remained there before the bathroom door finally opened.
Ethan stepped out wearing only a white towel hanging low around his hips. Under the pale moonlight, his sharp features appeared colder than ever, distant and impossible to approach.
The moment he passed beside me, I rose quickly and wrapped both arms tightly around him from behind.

His body tensed briefly, though he made no move to pull away.
“Ethan… don’t leave.” My words came muffled against the firmness of his back, carrying a desperation I could no longer conceal. “Please stop asking about the things I can’t tell you yet. Just give me some time. Just a little longer.”
For several unbearable seconds, he said nothing at all. I thought he might pry my hands away and walk off again.
At last, a weary breath escaped him. He turned around and drew me against his chest, one hand cradling the back of my head gently.
“This has something to do with your father, doesn’t it?” The sharpness from earlier had disappeared completely, replaced with a tenderness so soft it nearly shattered me.
My shoulders trembled faintly, but I stayed silent and buried myself deeper against him.
“Fine, I won’t force you to explain. But whenever you decide you’re ready, I’ll listen,” he murmured, and pressed a kiss on my forehead.
His fingers moved carefully through my tangled strands before his eyes settled on my swollen eyelids. “Did I scare you earlier?” he asked quietly.
I nodded truthfully. Tears threatened again as a sting crept up my nose. “You vanished without warning. You ignored every call. I kept imagining horrible things. I thought maybe someone had hurt you… or your enemies had found you. I never expected you’d spend hours waiting outside the cemetery.”
A soft chuckle escaped him.
“Don’t worry about me. I’m tougher than that,” he replied before his expression darkened slightly. “But Frank seems remarkably dedicated. The cemetery staff mentioned he visits often.”
My heartbeat stumbled, and I said quickly, “It really was just a coincidence. I didn’t know he would show up there.”
