Chapter 585:
Ignoring the soreness in my body, I pushed myself upright against the headboard and answered sincerely, “Tracy, do what feels right to you. If you care about each other and he’s genuinely trying, why deny yourself happiness? After everything we’ve survived, we know better than anyone that nothing about tomorrow is guaranteed. Don’t waste today being afraid of what might come later.”
Tracy sighed. “But… are you truly okay with me being with him? Back then, he stood on Rola’s side. Frank even scolded me for turning against you.”
I smiled faintly. “Jeremy was protecting his family’s interests. I never blamed him for that. Besides, he’s helped us more than once afterward. Tracy, you’re important to me. Seeing you happy matters far more.”
After our conversation, she sounded much lighter. Before hanging up, she laughed and tossed out one last tease. “Anyway, drink something warm for that throat. Honey tea or whatever. You sound terrible.”
Once the call ended, I glanced around the quiet hospital room and muttered to myself, “That man is out of control. If he ever does this to me again, I swear I’ll tear into him!”

“Oh? Are you going to do that to me in bed?”
Ethan’s amused voice suddenly came from the doorway.
I jumped so hard I nearly dropped my phone.
He stepped inside, dressed casually, looking perfectly refreshed, his hair neat and effortless. Compared to him, I probably looked like a complete wreck.
“W-when did you come back?” I stuttered, quickly yanking the blanket higher to hide the marks scattered across my neck.
Lianne’s POV
“Funny timing, I walked in just when you were talking about tearing into me.” Ethan approached with a crooked smile, carrying a sleek paper sack the color of chestnuts. He unpacked the café’s signature sandwiches, a few warm pastries fresh from the oven, and a pair of hot coffees releasing curls of steam.
“Where were you?” I asked instead, steering the conversation elsewhere.
“Needed some air.” He placed everything neatly across the bedside table before adding with a quiet laugh, “And honestly, I had to get my head straight. If I’d stayed here any longer, I probably would’ve dragged you right back under those sheets.”
I narrowed my eyes at him, though there wasn’t much annoyance behind it. The look came out far more playful than sharp.
Hunger gnawed at me, so I grabbed a fluffy pastry and bit into it. The sugary warmth spread through me instantly, easing the exhaustion weighing on my body.
The handcrafted coffee, though, was unbearable. The flavor hit too harshly, bitter and charred, lingering unpleasantly on my tongue. Maybe other people appreciated that strong taste, but I definitely didn’t.
Ethan remained beside me without touching his own food, his attention fixed entirely on me.
Occasionally, his calloused fingers brushed my skin, tugging lightly at my cheek or smoothing loose strands away from my face. The affection in his eyes felt almost tangible, dense enough to wrap around me completely.
After a while, the softness vanished from his features. His expression hardened into something colder.
“Lianne.” My name left his mouth slowly. “What are you going to do about Ivy?”
The second he spoke her name, I stopped chewing.
Ivy. The woman who shattered my home, ruined what Ethan and I once had, and left destruction in her wake.
