Chapter 588:
I gave a small shake of my head and managed a weak smile. “Nothing happened. I just needed a break from being inside. The room felt stifling.”
Melisa lowered herself onto the bench beside me. Without her usual medical coat, dressed instead in simple everyday clothes, she looked warm and easygoing.
For a while, neither of us spoke. Then she broke the silence. “Lianne, I’m leaving Thiynia.”
Surprise immediately swept over me, and I turned toward her.
“To keep things from becoming complicated, Ethan said I can’t continue as his doctor anymore. During the Thorn Pack council meeting, he also rejected the engagement arrangement in front of everyone.” A bitter smile crossed her lips, resignation clouding her expression. “There’s nothing left for me here now. I’m planning to return home and continue my magical training. Maybe someday, after I’ve truly mastered my abilities, I’ll come back.”
She nudged my shoulder lightly with her hand. “I can’t wait to hear the news about you and Ethan establishing a bond. When that day comes, make sure you invite me.”
Her words tightened painfully around my chest, leaving an ache that spread through me.

Seeing the sincerity in her eyes, I could no longer force myself to hide the truth.
“Melisa… Ethan and I… we probably won’t bond,” I said gently, my voice nearly swallowed by the air.
The expression on her face stiffened instantly. She stared at me in shock. “What are you talking about? Lianne, this isn’t funny.”
“I’m serious.”
My gaze settled on the fading sunlight sinking beyond the horizon, my tone hollow and detached.
Melisa abruptly stood up, alarm filling her features. “Have you lost your senses? Do you hear yourself right now? Everyone can see how much Ethan cares about you. He nearly died protecting you. He’s even willing to clash with both his grandmother and my family just to stay with you. Do you realize how extraordinary that is? Why would you throw it away?”
“Melisa.” I looked directly at her before speaking softly. “If you learned that someone related to the person you loved had a hand in your father’s death… could you really stay beside him forever?”
Her entire body went still, like the ground had vanished beneath her feet.
She blinked at me in disbelief, her voice shaky. “You… are you saying… no, that can’t be true. There has to be some misunderstanding.”
“I wish there were.” A hollow laugh escaped me as I rose from the bench and brushed dirt from my skirt. “But even if it turns out to be wrong, my time with him is running out anyway. It’s almost over.”
She remained frozen in shock, and I continued quietly, almost trying to comfort her instead. “Melisa, you’re kind and sincere. If Ethan ever chose you, I’d genuinely be happy for both of you. Someone honest like you suits him far better than Ivy… or someone like me, carrying so many burdens.”
