Chapter 599:
I wanted to ask him. I wanted to demand an explanation. But when I looked at his face, twisted with pain even in sleep, every bit of courage I had disappeared.
I couldn’t bring myself to ask.
Because deep down, I feared the answer. I was terrified that one question would destroy the fragile peace between us.
Exhaustion finally overtook Ethan, pulling him into a deep sleep.
Even then, he never let go of my wrist. He held on tightly, as though that single grip was the only thing keeping him grounded. As though letting go for even a moment would mean losing me forever.

I held Ethan in silence, listening to the occasional birdsong drifting in through the window.
However, no matter how tightly I held him, I continued to feel uneasy. I couldn’t shake the feeling that this brief moment of peace between us was only the stillness that came before a storm.
Ethan’s POV
For the last two days, I had lived as if I were standing on the edge of a blade. Every step felt fraught with danger, and with every passing minute, I grew more anxious as I waited for news from Nic.
Lianne seemed to have noticed just how close I was to breaking apart.
Perhaps she was worried I would do something reckless again, whether it was torturing myself with another freezing shower or something even worse. Because of that, she refused to let go of my hand each night when we went to sleep.
Morning light slipped through the blinds and spread softly across the hospital room.
As I slowly opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was Lianne, asleep beside me.
Our fingers were still intertwined. Neither of us had let go.
She had always been a light sleeper. The moment I moved, her eyes fluttered open.
When she saw me, some of the worry lingering on her face finally faded. She let out a long sigh of relief.
“Good morning, Ethan,” she said gently, her fingertips lightly tracing the back of my hand in a soothing motion.
As I looked at her face, my heart felt as though a dull, rusty blade had pierced it. It ached so badly.
I suddenly withdrew my hand.
Ignoring the confusion and hurt that immediately appeared in her eyes, I forced my weak body upright.
At that moment, the phone beside my pillow vibrated.
It was a secure message from Nic. “The video has been restored and is ready for transmission.”
My eyes narrowed instantly, and my fingers tightened around the bedsheet.
“Is something wrong?” Lianne asked with concern, leaning closer.
“No.” I turned off the screen at once. The coldness in my voice startled even me.
Without meeting her gaze, I came up with an excuse. “It’s a confidential matter from the company. There’s an emergency meeting regarding the core territory allocation of Thorn Pack. I need to deal with it right away.”
Lianne paused briefly. A flicker of disappointment crossed her eyes. However, she nodded understandingly. “Okay. Sort that out first. The kids were asking about you last night. They wanted you to build blocks with them…”
