Chapter 606:
“The thing I destroyed was the infected trail attached to it. If I hadn’t removed it completely, you wouldn’t even be standing here arguing with me. Your findings would’ve been wiped out, and all your work would’ve been for nothing. And if you’d taken corrupted evidence into court, the only outcome would’ve been public humiliation,” Ethan said with a humorless smile.
I could barely process his words.
I’d been wrong.
He hadn’t sabotaged me at all. He’d been shielding the only leverage I had left.
Ethan lowered his gaze and said coldly, “In three days, I’ll give you the untouched original footage. Clean, admissible, impossible to challenge. After that, if you choose court or decide to leave with the children, I won’t interfere.”
The truth crashed into me all at once, making my entire body shake.
He had intentionally allowed me to think the evidence was gone. Every cold glance. Every detached word. It had all been deliberate.
He wanted to know whether I would trust him when things turned uncertain.

And I failed.
Without hesitation, I turned against him. I wounded him with accusations sharp enough to destroy whatever fragile connection we still had.
The fury burning inside me moments ago vanished beneath crushing remorse.
“Ethan…” My trembling fingers reached toward him, trying to catch his sleeve.
But it was too late. He had already turned away and left the room. His sleeve slipped through my grasp.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed inside my pocket. Frank again.
I stared at his name glowing across the screen while regret twisted painfully in my chest.
I had trusted Frank without question, but I ended up hurting the man who had sacrificed everything for me, even his own blood.
Drawing in a shaky breath, I forced myself to steady my emotions before stepping out of the room.
I eventually found Ethan on the hospital rooftop.
He sat alone near the terrace edge in a woven chair, moonlight outlining his figure in silver. From a distance, he looked painfully isolated, like someone abandoned by the entire world.
I stayed where I was, hidden near the doorway instead of approaching him.
Right now, neither of us knew how to speak without causing more damage.
The night air bit through my thin clothing.
I folded my arms tightly against myself, trying to trap a little warmth.
Ethan never looked back, yet his senses remained impossibly sharp.
He recognized me from the faint sound of my breathing and the trace of my scent drifting through the wind.
“Go inside.” His tone carried no warmth at all. “It’s too cold out here.”
I ignored him and sat several steps away on the stone staircase.
I wanted to tell him the cold didn’t matter. That I only wanted to stay near him. But the weight in my throat kept every word trapped inside.
I waited silently. Part of me hoped he would notice the way I shivered like he used to. That he would scold me under his breath before wrapping me in his arms and covering me with that familiar robe carrying the scent of pinewood.
This time, nothing happened.
The quiet stretching between us became unbearable.
Eventually, Ethan rose to his feet and walked past me.
His footsteps never faltered. Even the wind trailing behind him felt colder after he passed.
