Chapter 607:
He didn’t spare me a single glance.
Pain tightened sharply in my chest, and tears burned behind my eyes.
I understood why. My mistrust had hurt him deeply, and the argument between us had widened the distance separating us into something far more dangerous.
Without speaking, I followed him back downstairs.

The room felt painfully tense the moment we entered.
Ethan sat at the desk, flipped open his laptop, and buried himself in work. His long fingers moved rapidly over the keys, never pausing.
Meanwhile, I remained perched on the bed, stiff and uneasy, like a child awaiting punishment. Even breathing too loudly felt risky.
Then my phone rang again, cutting through the silence.
This time, it was Tracy.
The instant I answered, her frantic voice spilled through the speaker. “Lianne, finally! Frank’s not okay. He’s been calling you nonstop, but you never answered. He locked himself in his room and won’t come out. He hasn’t eaten anything, and nobody can reach him.”
My chest tightened immediately. Without thinking, I looked toward Ethan across the room.
Lianne’s POV
Ethan’s typing hesitated for a moment, then resumed its steady rhythm.
“Let me talk to Frank,” I said softly.
A moment later, Frank’s weak and hoarse voice came through the phone. “Lianne… I’m sorry. This is all because of me. I ruined everything. I couldn’t keep the video safe…”
“Frank, listen carefully.” I softened my tone, doing my best to comfort him. “I’ll take care of the video. Ethan has agreed to help me sort it out, so you don’t have to worry anymore. Just make sure you’re eating well, okay?”
There was a long silence on the other end before Frank answered, “Okay. As long as you’re fine… I won’t bother you anymore.”
After the call ended, I heaved a deep sigh, but the weight in my heart only seemed to grow heavier.
I asked Tracy to keep Frank company and help calm him down. Then I put away my phone and headed back into the hospital room.
Ethan remained exactly where he had been. The glow from the laptop screen outlined his striking features.
Having changed into a comfortable set of lounge clothes, I quietly sat on the nearby sofa, not daring to interrupt him without reason.
Just then, my phone chimed with another notification.
It was a message from Frank.
He repeatedly apologized, saying he had only wanted to help me uncover the truth behind my father’s death and spare me from being trapped in this painful situation.
I patiently sent back a few reassuring messages, telling him that everything would work out in the end.
Not long afterward, I got two voice messages.
The moment I saw them, my heart tightened.
My first instinct was to ignore them. But perhaps because my mind was elsewhere, my finger slipped and pressed the play button instead.
The silence in the room was broken by the audio.
