Chapter 611:
Before she could finish speaking, Ethan cut her off without hesitation. A hint of impatience edged his voice as he said, “I already have a mate.”
Those simple words landed like an impenetrable wall, instantly shutting down every hopeful advance.
Standing beneath the shade of the tree, I felt my heart skip unexpectedly.
Only then did I understand why the blonde woman had walked away looking so crestfallen earlier.
Ruby noticed me from afar. Like a cheerful little rabbit, she skipped over and threw herself into my arms.
Silas, meanwhile, stayed beside Ethan. Looking up at him with a playful grin, he teased, “Dad, you rejected them so fast. Were you worried Mom would get jealous?”
Ethan casually ruffled Silas’s hair. His expression remained composed, his voice calm and unreadable as he answered, “She wouldn’t.”
He spoke with absolute certainty, yet I caught the briefest flicker in his eyes, a tiny, almost invisible trace of anticipation.
He wanted me to feel jealous, to reveal even the smallest sign that I cared about him.
Yet all I could offer him was silence.

For the remainder of the afternoon, Ethan’s exceptional looks continued to attract the attention of countless women.
One after another, they gathered the courage to approach him, only to be met with the same detached response. “I already have a mate.” He repeated the words almost mechanically, keeping every admirer firmly at a distance.
One especially persistent young woman refused to back down and asked, “Your mate must be gorgeous, right? Is she prettier than I am?”
Ethan didn’t spare her so much as a glance, treating her as though she weren’t even there.
By the time evening arrived, Ruby was completely worn out. Clinging to Ethan, she pouted that she was hungry.
She pointed toward a candy shop in the distance, pleading sweetly for some candy.
“Ruby, we’ll be having dinner soon. No candy,” I said firmly, trying to maintain my authority as her mother.
Ruby stubbornly turned her face away and wrapped her little arms tightly around Ethan’s neck. “I can’t hear you! Dad, I want candy! Please.”
She was obviously trying to get what she wanted by winning over her father.
Holding Ruby securely in his arms, Ethan slowly raised his eyes to meet mine.
The light of the setting sun softened every line of his face, making him seem almost unreal, like a beautiful dream that could disappear at any moment.
He didn’t immediately indulge Ruby. Instead, he looked straight into my eyes, his voice gentle. “I’ll listen to you, Lianne.”
In the end, I gave in and allowed Ruby to have a single piece of candy.
Ethan carried Ruby as they walked ahead of us. Their long shadows stretched across the ground beneath the crimson glow of the sunset, carrying a quiet sadness I couldn’t quite explain.
I followed a few steps behind, Silas’s small hand resting securely in mine. As I watched the warm interaction between father and daughter, an inexplicable heaviness settled deep inside my chest.
