Chapter 629:
I watched him skillfully rinse the vegetables, and I made up my mind in that moment.
I couldn’t stay at Tracy’s apartment forever, and I couldn’t continue accepting Frank’s kindness.
It was time to find a place of my own.
By the time Tracy woke up and came out of her bedroom, Frank had already left.
The dining table was filled with freshly cooked dishes, still steaming. Tracy stood there, staring at the meal, her eyes turning red.
She sat down and picked up her fork, but instead of eating, she looked at me with a wistful smile. “Lianne, I really miss the way things used to be. Back then, our biggest concern was passing our exams. There was no heartbreak and none of these complicated problems.”
I smiled softly, trying to comfort her. “Pain is inevitable with growth, Tracy. It’s something everyone will go through at some point.”
We were just about to start eating when the doorbell rang again.
This time, it came in a series of loud, urgent chimes.
It sounded impatient, almost frantic.

Frowning, Tracy got to her feet and walked over to the video intercom by the front door.
The instant she saw the person on the screen, her face went cold.
It was Jeremy.
He was looking straight into the camera. His lips moved nonstop as he repeatedly called her name.
Tracy quickly turned to me and whispered, “Shh… don’t make a sound. Let’s pretend we’re not home. I don’t want to see him or say a single word to him.”
Then Jeremy began to bang on the door. He never stopped knocking. It only became more persistent. He had obviously known Tracy was inside the apartment.
He continued calling out to her, sounding so desperate, like he was on the verge of breaking down.
Hearing him like this made me think about how different people could be.
If it were Ethan, a proud and reserved Alpha, he would never have stood outside the door shouting and refusing to leave.
He would keep his composure and wait quietly from afar.
“Tracy, why don’t you go talk to him?” I said gently. “If he keeps knocking like this, the neighbors are bound to complain. Besides, it’s better to settle things in person than leave issues unresolved.”
Tracy sat at the table, absentmindedly chewing her food. Her eyes filled with determination. “There’s nothing left to talk about, Lianne. Jeremy’s world is too complicated. His ex-girlfriend, that child… I’m not going to waste my life tangled in that mess and making myself miserable.”
Eventually, we chose to ignore the commotion outside. We quietly finished our meal while Jeremy’s relentless knocking echoed through the apartment.
After a while, everything finally fell silent.
Assuming Jeremy had given up and left, I suggested we go downstairs for a walk to get some fresh air.
After spending days running into one dead end after another with my father’s case, I could no longer bear the suffocating stillness of the apartment.
