Chapter 631:
Bitterness rose sharply in my chest. Fueled by irritation, I typed again. “I’m drunk at the park. I wanted you to pick me up, but since you’re not here, I’ll call Frank instead. He already said he’d look after me.”
As soon as the message was sent, I laughed under my breath. Pathetic.
What exactly had I hoped for?
Did I seriously expect Ethan to storm over the second another man’s name appeared, just like he used to?
I pushed myself upright, preparing to leave. Then measured footsteps sounded behind me.
Ethan’s POV
My phone screen glowed harshly against the darkness.
“I’m drunk at the park. I wanted you to pick me up, but since you’re not here, I’ll call Frank instead. He already said he’d look after me.”

The instant I read Lianne’s message, the calm I had fought to maintain collapsed completely.
I knew exactly what she was doing. She was testing me, trying to provoke a reaction from me.
I should have ignored it. Instead, I found myself unable to stay put.
The image of Frank touching her, comforting her, holding her while she was intoxicated, sent my wolf into a frenzy.
Arthur roared inside my mind, “No. Go to her now, Ethan!”
I shoved the car door open and headed straight through the park, cutting past shrubs and pathways with long, hurried strides.
Lianne sat curled on the bench beneath the dim lights, one hand loosely wrapped around an unfinished can of beer. Her face tilted upward toward the sky, as though she was lost in thought.
She turned when she heard me approach. Her eyes were unfocused from alcohol, and a careless little smile tugged at her lips. That expression hit me harder than it should have.
“I thought you said you weren’t back. Ethan, you’ve always been terrible at lying,” she said with a faint laugh.
I stopped in front of her, suddenly unable to speak.
How was I supposed to explain that I had been lingering near her apartment building for days? Or that I stayed hidden because I thought distancing myself would make things easier for her?
When she lifted the beer again for another drink, I finally lost patience. I grabbed the can from her hand before she could swallow more. “That’s enough. You’re going to make yourself sick.”
She immediately frowned and staggered upright, trying to snatch it back. “And who are you to stop me? What right do you even have anymore?”
I didn’t let her continue.
Her reactions were slow from the alcohol, so before she could resist, I stepped forward and pulled her firmly against me.
My coat closed around her small frame instantly.
She stumbled from the sudden movement and instinctively grabbed my waist to steady herself. Her cheek pressed against my chest, warm breaths seeping through my shirt.
“You’re worse than me at pretending,” she whispered softly, already seeing through me.
“I only came back because of Jeremy,” I muttered, clinging desperately to that excuse.
“I know… you’re always the one who figures everything out first… that’s just who you are, Ethan…” she mumbled drowsily.
The exhaustion and alcohol overtook her completely until all her weight slumped against me.
