Chapter 632:
The wind grew colder around us. I worried she would catch a fever if she stayed outside any longer. Worse, someone might see her like this.
I briefly considered taking her back to Tracy’s apartment, but remembering Jeremy and Tracy arguing downstairs immediately changed my mind. That environment would only upset her again.
“I’ll take you back,” I said quietly.
“No… Tracy’s talking to Jeremy… I don’t want to interrupt…” she protested weakly while pushing at my chest with little strength behind it.
I stopped arguing. Sliding one arm beneath her legs and the other around her back, I lifted her into my arms.

The sudden motion startled her awake slightly. Her arms instinctively circled my neck as she squirmed weakly. “Put me down… Ethan…”
I stared at her flushed face, forcing down the ache tightening inside me. “If I hadn’t come, would you really have called Frank?”
She went still. For several quiet seconds, her sleepy gaze remained fixed on mine. Then understanding slowly crossed her face. She realized it was her message, sent out of frustration, that dragged me here tonight.
Before we even made it out of the park, she had already fallen asleep against me. Her breathing softened near my neck, every trace of stubbornness from earlier gone completely.
I understood every one of her little tests. Still, I didn’t dare ignore them.
I couldn’t gamble with the possibility of leaving her alone in that state. I couldn’t stand the thought of her seeking comfort from another man simply because she was upset.
I carried her to a nearby hotel and sent Jeremy a brief message so Tracy wouldn’t panic looking for her.
After placing Lianne carefully onto the bed, I tried pulling away. But even asleep, her fingers clutched tightly to my coat.
I attempted several times to loosen her grip, but eventually gave up with a quiet sigh. Removing my shoes, I lay beside her without even taking off my coat.
I drew her gently into my arms, brushing my fingertips across her sleeping face.
Pain pressed heavily against my chest. Lowering my head, I placed a light kiss against her forehead.
“Lianne, if fate really won’t let us belong to each other anymore… will you someday choose Frank instead?” I whispered into the silence.
Ethan’s POV
Lianne slept soundly in my arms, her soft breaths brushing against my neck. Of course, she was unable to respond to my question.
I fixed my gaze on her peaceful sleeping face. I wanted to hold onto this moment for as long as I could and carve it deep into my memory.
Just as I finally glanced away, the phone on the pillow buzzed.
Even that subtle sound was enough to disturb the drunk Lianne. Her delicate brows drew together, and she let out a faint grumble of displeasure.
Still half-asleep, she reached out aimlessly, searching for her phone.
I frowned and picked it up before she could. Silencing the notification with one hand, I gently rubbed her back with the other and whispered, “It’s nothing. Go back to sleep.”
