Chapter 638:
But wasn’t this exactly what I had wanted?
Just as I was sinking deeper into my messy emotions, my phone suddenly rang, pulling me back to reality.
I answered the call, but before I could speak, a cold, commanding voice came through the line.
It was Rola.
She had dropped the warm, caring mask she once wore. In its place was cold fury. “Lianne, I thought you were smarter than this. Do you really think hiring a lawyer will help you win? Do you believe those incomplete pieces of evidence are enough to shake the Voss family’s foundation?”
I stayed silent.
Hearing no reply, Rola’s voice became even harsher.
“Lianne, you’re far too naive,” she mocked. “In this city, even the law bows before powerful families. Do you honestly think Ethan would watch his grandmother go to prison? He’s still a Voss. When the time comes, he’ll stand with me.”

I tightened my grip around my phone, but my voice remained calm. “Rola, if you were really as confident as you claim, you wouldn’t be calling me just to intimidate me.”
“You bitch!” she snapped, her anger flaring.
“As for whose side Ethan chooses,” I said casually, “that’s his decision. This case will be decided by the law and the evidence, not by anyone’s influence. That’s all I have to say. Goodbye.”
I hung up before she had the chance to speak further.
I had no interest in exchanging words with her, nor did I want to lose my composure over the phone.
Arguments like that were meaningless. More importantly, I wanted to hold on to the little dignity I had left. I didn’t want Ethan trapped between us and forced into an impossible position.
Even if everything between us had come to an end, I refused to be the kind of woman who only made life harder for him or gave others another reason to criticize him.
I took a slow, deep breath and buried the storm raging inside my heart. Then I gathered the evidence I had carefully organized and headed back to Bastion Law Firm.
Inside the office, Tim was studying the additional evidence I had brought with great care.
“Miss Riley,” he said, adjusting his glasses with a serious expression, “based on the evidence we currently have, there’s a strong chance Ivy will be identified as the mastermind. As for Rola, her position makes the situation more complicated. Many of her instructions were given verbally, so legally, her culpability may be judged less harshly than Ivy’s.”
I met his eyes firmly. “Tim, I know Ivy carried out the orders. But she wasn’t the one who wanted my father dead. She was only the weapon in Rola’s hands.”
As much as I hated to admit it, I could no longer deny the truth. Every bit of hostility Rola had shown toward Ivy before had simply been part of her act.
