Chapter 644

Chapter 644:
“Understood. Should I instruct HR to complete the process immediately?” Noah asked again.
I typed “Yes.” But as I looked at the single word on the screen, an invisible hand seemed to tighten around my heart.
Once the resignation was finalized, she’d be gone from my sight by tomorrow — and from my life for good.
In the end, I couldn’t make myself press send. Or perhaps I simply couldn’t let go of the small, pathetic hope I was still clinging to.
I erased the message and typed a new one instead. “Follow the terms of her contract. Her six-month notice period begins tomorrow. During that time, she will personally complete every handover assignment.”
“Understood,” Noah replied almost instantly.
Setting my phone aside, I leaned back in my chair as a bitter smile tugged at my lips. A dull ache spread relentlessly through my chest.
I knew she had already made up her mind. I also knew six months wouldn’t change the outcome.

But this was the only selfish thing I could still do — keep her by my side for just a little while longer.
Lianne’s POV:
I had officially submitted my resignation. Normally, employees serving their notice period were gradually removed from important projects and assigned routine wrap-up work to ensure a smooth transition.
But the moment I opened the project documents Noah had sent me, I froze in disbelief.
Not only had I not been removed from the project, I was still listed as the lead director for one of the company’s most important initiatives.
Even more unexpectedly, Noah specifically informed me that because the project had entered a critical stage, I was required to return to headquarters to oversee its progress in person and chair the weekly executive meetings.
Staring at the message on my screen, I privately texted Noah. “This doesn’t seem like standard procedure. I’ve already submitted my resignation. Major projects should be handed over to colleagues who’ll remain with the company. Was this Ethan’s decision?”
Noah replied with his usual impeccable professionalism. “You’re reading too much into it. This assignment is based entirely on operational needs and professional capability. Alpha has been extremely busy recently and hasn’t had time to concern himself with personnel arrangements. For now, please focus on carrying out your responsibilities.”
I wanted to refuse. But every excuse I came up with sounded overly emotional the moment I considered saying it aloud.
As long as I was still receiving a salary, I had an obligation to do my job.
I drew a deep breath and willed myself to come to terms with the arrangement.
“Will Ethan be attending those meetings?” I sent another message before I could stop myself.
Noah replied almost immediately. “Not for the time being.”
The moment I read those words, I felt foolish for asking.
I silently reminded myself to lock away those tangled emotions and stop letting my personal relationship interfere with my work.
Determined not to make another mistake, I stayed up almost the entire night, carefully reviewing every page of the project’s extensive documentation.
