Chapter 652:
With my briefcase in hand, I hurried out of the office to handle some paperwork before the workday ended.
Almost as soon as I sent the message, Tracy called. She sounded a little gloomy. “Frank didn’t invite me. He’s probably still upset because he thinks getting back together with Jeremy is a bad idea.”
“He’s just worried about you,” I said as I started the car, trying to comfort her. “Come tonight. Take his birthday as a chance to fix things. Besides, I need your help. It’ll be too awkward if I’m there with him by myself.”
Tracy chuckled softly, then let out an exasperated sigh. “Alright, I’ll come with you. But my morning sickness has been awful lately. If Frank sees me, he’ll definitely start scolding me again for getting pregnant so quickly. Lianne, you’re going to have to help me out.”
“You can’t keep avoiding this forever,” I replied, tightening my grip on the steering wheel, my expression turning serious. “Why don’t you bring Jeremy with you tonight? You’ll have to face this sooner or later. Let Frank say whatever he wants. You’re pregnant now, and all this stress isn’t good for the baby.”
The line fell silent for quite a while. It sounded as though Tracy was struggling with herself before she finally reached a decision. “Okay. I’ll talk to Jeremy. See you tonight.”
After ending the call, I took a deep breath.

With Tracy and Jeremy joining us, tonight’s dinner would probably be much less uncomfortable.
Before long, I arrived at the office building.
I switched off the engine and reached for the door, but just then, my phone vibrated inside my bag.
It was a message from Noah.
Assuming it had something to do with work, I opened it without thinking.
But it wasn’t a text. I saw a blurry photo on the screen.
The picture showed a hospital room bathed in cold, pale light.
Ethan — the man who always seemed so strong, like nothing could touch him — was sitting alone on the bed.
He was still dressed in that perfectly fitted dark suit, but his tie had been loosened, and the top buttons of his shirt were undone, slightly exposing his collarbone.
An IV needle was taped to the back of his left hand. A clear tube ran from the drip stand, sending cold medicine into his bloodstream.
His head hung low. His slightly disheveled hair hid those dark, unreadable eyes. He looked exhausted and vulnerable.
The sight made me gasp and left my heart aching.
Wasn’t Ethan supposed to be overseas for a conference?
So why was he lying in a hospital room now?
I couldn’t take my eyes off the photo, my fingertips turning cold.
With trembling hands, I zoomed in on the picture.
In it, Ethan leaned weakly against the stiff hospital bed with his eyes shut.
His striking face, which usually held an air of authority, now appeared noticeably thinner beneath the harsh white lights. Every trace of his usual composure and pride had been worn away by illness.
