Chapter 656:

“Yes… this job is everything to me.” Zoe slowly raised her head. Her eyes were red as she searched my face, hoping to earn my sympathy. “Lianne, for the sake of the time we worked together in Brinewick, please forgive me. I swear I’ll never cross the line again.”
I had no desire to punish her. Office conflicts never brought any real sense of satisfaction.
“Think before you speak from now on,” I said in a calm, detached voice. “You may leave.”
Lianne’s POV:
Zoe was relieved I let her go so easily. She nodded repeatedly and turned to leave.
Her eyes accidentally fell on my phone. The screen was still lit up with Ethan’s incoming call. Her eyes widened in shock, as though she had seen something terrifying. She immediately lowered her head and hurried away without another glance.
Silence settled over the office again. I stared at Ethan’s name on the screen, and for some reason, my heart suddenly jumped.
The whole situation felt strangely ironic. Everyone in this company treated me with extreme caution, not because of my abilities or position, but simply because they feared Ethan.
Our relationship was over, yet his influence still surrounded me like an invisible wall. No matter where I went, I couldn’t seem to step outside his shadow.

I took a deep breath and picked up the call. “Hello?”
“Why did it take you so long to answer?” Ethan’s voice was low and rough, weighed down by obvious exhaustion.
My heart tightened, but I kept my voice steady and replied with a casual lie. “I was busy just now and didn’t hear the phone. I called earlier because I wanted to check on the kids.”
“Really?” He let out a dry chuckle, then asked coldly, “Lianne, you think I don’t know? Someone insulted and cursed you in my company, and you’re still trying to protect them?”
My grip on the phone tightened.
It seemed he had watched everything that happened in the hallway through the security cameras.
“I’ve already told Noah to deal with it,” he said in a firm tone that left no room for discussion. “Someone like Zoe has no place at Voss Group.”
“No!” I blurted out. “Ethan, please don’t fire her. She already apologized to me. Besides, if such a minor incident becomes a big issue, people around the company will only gossip even more, and it’ll make things more difficult for me.”
I paused for a moment, then spoke in a low tone, unable to hide the bitterness in my voice. “Besides, I only have six months left before my transition ends. I don’t want any unnecessary trouble during the time I have left.”
My words hung between us like a sharp blade, slicing through the fragile calm we had both tried to maintain.
The line went completely silent.
I could hear his breathing through the phone. It was uneven and slightly strained.
“Ethan,” I called out at last. “You don’t sound good. If you’re sick, you should get some rest instead of staying up all night working.”
“I’m fine,” he insisted, but the weakness in his voice made the words impossible to believe. “I’ve just been attending too many seminars lately. My throat is a little irritated.”
