Chapter 685:
She flinched as though my grip had hurt her. Tears slipped down her cheeks as she sobbed. Between broken sobs, she began talking about the days we’d spent together in Thiynia, insisting that I never pushed her away back then, that we were always so close.
Hearing those words, I found myself speechless, my heart aching.
Ethan’s POV:
I was about to bring up Rola. I wanted to remind Lianne of the hatred that had always stood between us. Maybe if I did, she would come to her senses and stop tempting me.
But the moment I met her tear-filled, red, sad eyes, my grip on her wrist loosened. She took the chance to reach for me again.
I let out a low, guttural groan as an overpowering rush of desire swept through me, tearing down the last bit of self-control I had left.
I couldn’t bear to shove her away, afraid I might hurt her. All I could do was speak in a low, gentle voice, trying to persuade her to stop.
But the longing I had buried for months, the endless restraint, and the quiet madness I had kept locked inside all broke free in that moment.

My hand slid to the back of her head, and without another thought, I pressed my lips against hers.
At that moment, I understood more clearly than ever that this might be the last time we would ever share such closeness.
I had believed I would never hold her like this again for the rest of my life. Even though I knew this stolen moment of intimacy was happening only because she was lost in a haze of alcohol.
Somewhere in the middle of it, her soft cries of discomfort brought me back to reality. Again and again, I kissed away her tears, whispering soft reassurances while promising to be as gentle as I could.
By the time everything was over, she had already drifted into a deep sleep, worn out and completely overcome by the alcohol.
I took a quick cold shower, hoping the cold water would calm the heat still burning inside me.
Afterward, I went out onto the balcony. I had dug through the deep corner of a drawer and found an old pack of cigarettes that had sat untouched for ages, covered in a thin layer of dust.
I had given up smoking for the sake of our children. But tonight, I needed the sharp sting of nicotine to keep myself grounded, to convince myself that everything that had happened was real.
Smoke drifted lazily between my fingers as I gazed over the silent city below. But inside, I felt an endless emptiness.
Later, I returned to the bedroom. I carefully wiped Lianne down, changed her into fresh pajamas, and gently tucked her beneath the blankets.
Then I slipped into bed beside her and drew her into my arms.
Sleep never came. My fingers continued to run gently through her hair, holding onto that brief, guilt-tinged warmth.
It wasn’t until the first light of dawn spread over the horizon that I quietly climbed out of bed.
Before leaving, I stood there for a while, taking one last look at her. Then I softly closed the guest room door behind me.
