Chapter 686:
The moment I woke up, a pounding headache ran through my skull.
I slowly opened my eyes and squinted at the crystal chandelier above me. The light scattering through its crystals pierced my vision, making the pain in my head even worse.
I must have been completely drunk the night before. Those cocktails had packed a much stronger punch than I’d expected.
I could vaguely remember being clear-headed while in the bathroom. After that, everything was a blank. I only had fragments of memory from the night before.
I had slept all the way until noon.
I tried to sit up, but every part of my body felt sore and drained, as though every muscle had been overworked. The aching in my waist and lower abdomen was especially intense, sending an uneasy chill through me.
I silently promised myself I would never drink again, but I knew that was impossible. With all the client dinners and office parties, it was wishful thinking.
I turned over, planning to hide my face in the pillow and escape reality for just a little longer. But a cool, familiar scent filled my senses. It was unmistakably Ethan’s.
A bitter smile tugged at my lips. I must have missed him so much that my hungover brain was creating vivid hallucinations.
But when I looked around the room more carefully, every drop of blood in my body seemed to freeze.

This wasn’t my apartment. It was the home Ethan and I had once shared.
Panic instantly drowned out the soreness in my body. I threw aside the blanket and rushed out of bed.
The moment my feet touched the floor, a stabbing pain shot through my legs. My knees gave way beneath me, and I collapsed heavily onto the thick carpet.
The bedroom door flew open immediately.
A tall figure hurried inside, carrying the cool morning air with him.
Before I could react, strong arms lifted me effortlessly and settled me back onto the edge of the bed.
Only then did I clearly see the face before me. His well-defined features, his dark eyes, and the crushing pressure radiating from him felt so real that a shiver raced down my spine.
“Ethan?” I whispered hoarsely, my mind completely blank.
So I wasn’t hallucinating.
He was really here. He was back, and he had shown up at my most vulnerable moment the night before.
A strange emotion flickered across Ethan’s eyes. He let go of my shoulders, straightened up, and spoke with a calmness that felt deliberately distant. “I found you drunk during the team-building event last night. Alex wasn’t taking proper care of you. Since you were already planning to visit the kids this weekend, I brought you back on my way home.”
On his way home?
From the villa where the team-building event was held to this house, he would have had to drive across nearly half the city.
