Chapter 688:
I stayed in the bathroom for almost half an hour, long enough for the steam to turn my skin a flushed pink. Only then did I put on the cotton slippers Ethan had left for me and slowly make my way toward the dining room, taking one hesitant step after another.
Drawing in a deep breath, I made up my mind. As long as Ethan said nothing about the night before, I would act as though it had never happened.
If we both silently accepted that unspoken agreement, then that foolish mistake could stay buried in the dark of that night forever.
By the time I entered the dining room, Ethan was already sitting at the table.
Morning sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a warm glow across his face.

As I walked over, he slid a glass of warm milk toward me, his steady eyes never leaving mine.
“About last night…” he began, his voice rough.
“I had way too much to drink and passed out!” I blurted before he could continue. My words rushed out in a panic, and I couldn’t bring myself to look at him. “I don’t remember a single thing. Really, I don’t remember anything.”
The moment I said it, regret hit me.
My eagerness to deny everything only made me look more suspicious.
Ethan went still, his fingers tightening around his coffee mug.
Silence hung between us for a long moment before he finally spoke in a low tone. “But I was completely sober the whole time, Lianne.”
My heart skipped a beat. I had never expected him to reject the excuse I’d practically handed him.
The embarrassment of feeling like every part of me had been laid bare made it hard to stay calm. Gathering my courage, I said softly, “I know. I know I was the one who started it. Ethan, I don’t blame you. I really don’t. I only have one request. Please don’t mention it again. Let’s just act like it never happened, okay?”
He looked at me in silence. A mix of emotions stirred in his dark eyes, but I couldn’t make sense of any of them. In the end, they faded into a faint, bitter smile.
Whatever words had been on the tip of his tongue never came out. He gave a small, resigned nod, rose from his chair, and walked toward the garden. “I’ll go check on the kids.”
The tight knot of tension inside me finally loosened, and I sank back into my seat with a long, weary sigh.
The carefully prepared breakfast in front of me no longer held any appeal. I couldn’t force myself to eat even a bite. I only took a few absent-minded sips of warm milk, hoping it would calm the uneasy feeling in my stomach.
Not long after, the silence broke with the lively chaos of Ruby and Silas returning from their training.
“Mommy!” Ruby rushed into the room like a happy little butterfly and threw herself into my arms. Her sweet, milky scent wrapped around me, instantly easing the anxiety weighing on my heart.
