Chapter 690:
“Were you waiting long?” I asked, nervously brushing a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
“I just got here,” he answered casually.
I knew that wasn’t true. That was just the kind of man Ethan was, always downplaying his efforts.
He was also someone who could wait with endless patience, staying hidden in the shadows until the prey walked right into his arms.

Once we got to the ground floor, Ethan placed my suitcase in the backseat, then walked around to open the front passenger door for me.
It was a thoughtful, gentlemanly gesture, but it also left me with no excuse to hide in the back seat.
I bit my lip. Unable to think of a graceful way to refuse, I quietly slipped into the passenger seat.
As the car glided toward the kids’ pickup location, an awkward silence settled between us, making the air feel strangely heavy.
When the car stopped at a red light, Ethan turned to look at me, his expression more serious than usual. “Lianne, about that night, I’m sorry. I didn’t use protection.”
His blunt honesty broke the fragile calm I’d been struggling to hold on to.
“I… I was in my safe period,” I whispered softly. Heat instantly spread across my face, leaving my cheeks burning.
The atmosphere inside the car grew even more stifling as another wave of embarrassment swept over me.
I couldn’t bring myself to look at him, so I fixed my gaze on the passing scenery outside the window, pretending to be completely absorbed in the streets flying by.
Lianne’s POV:
As we got closer to our destination, Ethan didn’t drive directly in. Instead, he eased off the gas so the car could move slowly.
“Lianne, we need to talk,” he said firmly, his eyes fixed on the road. “About us, where we stand now, and the future.”
My fingers tightened around the edge of my shirt. “I don’t want to talk about it,” I replied. “At least, not yet.”
Ignoring my refusal, Ethan pulled the car to the side of the road and turned off the engine.
He turned toward me, his dark eyes holding mine with unwavering intensity. “I’m not only talking about what happened that night. I want us to put an end to this endless, toxic cycle between us. How long are you going to keep shutting me out?”
I took a few deep breaths, trying to calm the turmoil inside me.
After a long pause, I finally looked him in the eye and said carefully, “We’ll talk once my father’s case is settled. Until then, I can’t make you any promises.”
He didn’t answer right away. He looked conflicted, hurt. Then he said, with resignation, “Alright. I’ll wait.”
He started the engine and got back on the road. For the rest of the drive, I kept my eyes lowered.
Ethan was far too perceptive. If I let even the smallest crack show, he would see straight through me.
