Chapter 716:
Jeremy looked as though every ounce of strength had left his body. He leaned against the wall, then slowly slid down until he was sitting on the floor.
His head stayed lowered as tears dropped onto the cold tiles.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” he whispered, his voice filled with guilt.
“How are you going to face her parents after this?” I asked. “A vacation that ends with their daughter losing her baby, I can’t even bring myself to say those words.”
“I… I don’t know. I’m sorry,” Jeremy slowly raised his head, his empty gaze fixed on the doors of the operating room.
It was obvious he had already accepted the possibility that the baby was gone, and the crushing weight of that thought left him completely hopeless.
The corridor fell into an oppressive silence, every second feeling unbearably heavy.
Then, at last, the operating room doors clicked open with a dull sound.
A masked doctor walked out. His tired eyes swept across the waiting group before he called out, “Who is Tracy’s family?”

“I am!” Jeremy stumbled to his feet and rushed over, grabbing the doctor’s sleeve in desperation. His words tumbled over one another as he quickly explained who he was, anxiously pleading to know how Tracy was doing.
I stood off to the side, my heart pounding so hard it hurt. My fingernails dug into my palms as I asked, my voice shaking, “Doctor, what about the baby? Is the baby alright?”
“The baby is fine.” The doctor pulled off his mask and let out a weary sigh. “It was a very close call, though. The mother’s body is naturally delicate, and the severe emotional shock she experienced triggered a threatened miscarriage. She must remain on strict bed rest for a while. She cannot experience any emotional upheaval, and she absolutely must not be put under any more stress.”
The instant I heard the baby was okay, the tension gripping me finally eased.
My legs weakened, and I leaned against Ethan, overwhelmed with relief.
Tears streamed down Jeremy’s face as he kept his eyes fixed on the operating room doors. Under his breath, he repeatedly thanked the Moon Goddess for showing mercy.
Ethan gave my hand a reassuring squeeze, the warmth of his palm calming my racing heart.
He looked down at me with worry. “You’ve been on your feet all night, and you haven’t even had dinner. I’ll have someone bring you some food.”
My thoughts were completely occupied with Tracy, leaving me with no desire to eat.
However, the determination in Ethan’s eyes made it clear he wasn’t going to give up until I ate something.
In the end, I reluctantly agreed to at least drink a glass of warm milk to settle my stomach.
A short while later, a nurse wheeled Tracy out of the operating room.
She lay motionless on the gurney, her face drained of all color. She looked so weak it seemed as though she could lose consciousness again at any moment.
