Chapter 719:
He stubbed out his cigarette and closed the distance between us. Reaching for my hand, he said, “Come to Nshire with me. I can keep you safe there.”
I stepped away, avoiding his hand while keeping my voice calm. “Ethan, your trial period as my boyfriend has ended. The vacation is over. It’s time for both of us to go back to our own lives.”
Silence settled between us, and the air suddenly turned cold.
Suddenly, Ethan moved closer to me. His tall figure blocked the light, leaving me wrapped in his shadow.
His eyes blazed with anger and helplessness as he ground out each word through clenched teeth. “Lianne, do you really have to treat me like this? Do you have to keep pushing me away?”
My heart ached. My fingernails dug into my palms as I struggled to maintain my composure. “Rola is your grandmother, whom you respect. She’s also the pillar of Thorn Pack. Ethan, I don’t want you to go against your pack because of me. I don’t want you caught between your grandmother and me.”
“That should be my decision!” he shouted, his voice rough with emotion. “Listen carefully, Lianne. If you keep pushing me away like this, I will leave and never come back to you.”
I stayed silent for a long while as the crushing ache in my heart worsened.
At last, I gathered my courage and met his sad eyes with a calm, unwavering gaze. “Then don’t.”
His hands curled into tight fists. The veins on the back of his hands stood out as his body shook.
He looked at me in disbelief, his voice breaking as he asked, “Why? Why do you always say such cruel words? You’re really ruthless.”

I forced my emotions back down and answered calmly, “I’ve always been this way. I don’t know how to love the right way. Ethan, I’m tired. I’m tired of carrying the weight of this relationship. There are too many things standing between us. Our loyalties are pulling us in different directions. It’s just too much.”
I watched as the light in his eyes dimmed. In order to make him give up on me, I continued, “Philip came to see me. So answer me honestly, Ethan. Somewhere in your heart, did you ever hope I would spare your grandmother?”
The silence that followed was stifling.
Ethan stood completely still. The confidence and authority that usually filled his eyes were gone. He now looked hesitant.
After what seemed like an endless stretch of time, he slowly closed his eyes and whispered, “Yes.”
I stood frozen.
Even though I had expected that answer, hearing him admit it still left my heart broken.
