Chapter 726:
“You didn’t know?” Jeremy turned toward me, disbelief written all over his face. “What happened between you two that day? Ever since he came back, he’s been like a man who’s lost his soul. He’s either buried in work or drinking himself into oblivion.”
“I only told him to stop interfering in my life,” I replied flatly.
“I don’t believe that’s all it was.” Jeremy’s frustration boiled over. “Do you even love him? You’ve put him through absolute misery. He went against Thorn Pack because of you, yet you couldn’t even offer him a little kindness. If the two of you had faced everything together, what couldn’t you have overcome? Why did you have to wound him with words like that?”
I kept my gaze on the trees racing by outside the window, bitterness weighing down my chest.
How could we possibly stand together? Between us lay my father’s death, a wound that would never truly close.
The verdict of the trial would decide everything. If justice prevailed, I’d still have the courage to ask Ethan for forgiveness. But if justice failed, I already knew what I would do.
Until then, I was simply existing, empty inside. Love had no place in my life.
“You don’t love him nearly as much as you say you do,” Jeremy continued, each word sharper than the last. “You can’t let go of your obsession. You can never give yourself to him the way he gives himself to you. In your heart, revenge will always come first.”
There was nothing I could say to defend myself. My silence became my confession.
The shrill screech of brakes tore through the night as Jeremy suddenly pulled the car onto the shoulder.
He turned toward me, pointing an accusing finger, his voice shaking with anger. “Do you have any idea how many things he’s done for you? How many problems he’s taken on alone? The assassins Rola sent after you. The attempts to remove him from power inside the pack. He’s carried every bit of it himself. He’s innocent, Lianne. So why does he have to suffer for you?”

“My father was innocent too.” I met his furious gaze without a trace of warmth in my eyes. “Jeremy, whatever I owe Ethan, I’ll repay someday. But right now, my father deserves justice. And as his daughter, I’m going to see it through.”
My answer only fueled Jeremy’s anger.
He let out a mocking laugh. “So that’s it? You relied on Ethan’s power to uncover the truth, and now that you’ve gotten what you wanted, you throw him away? Lianne, you’re really ruthless.”
I had no desire to explain myself, and even less desire to argue with him.
Without another word, I pushed open the door and stepped into the freezing night.
The cold wind sliced through me as I walked quickly down the deserted street.
Behind me, an engine rumbled to life. Jeremy’s car crept along beside me, his window lowered as he called out, “Get back in the car! You won’t find a taxi out here. If something happens to you, I won’t be able to face Tracy, or Ethan.”
“I don’t need your concern,” I shot back, picking up my pace.
