Chapter 728:
The burning sensation came in waves, one after another. My vision blurred as cold sweat quickly soaked through my blouse.
Summoning the last of my strength, I managed to pull into the underground parking garage of Voss Group.
The moment I stepped out of the car, my knees buckled. I crumpled onto the concrete floor, struggling to catch my breath while enduring the unbearable pain.
Through my blurred vision, I vaguely noticed a pair of polished black leather shoes come to a stop right in front of me.
My heart clenched at once. The familiar feeling sent countless thoughts racing through my mind.

For a brief moment, I believed it was Ethan. I thought he had come because he still couldn’t let me go. I instinctively looked up and whispered, my voice trembling, “Ethan…”
But the moment I saw the man’s face, my voice caught in my throat.
It wasn’t Ethan. It was Noah.
I couldn’t decide whether I felt relieved or disappointed. Bracing myself against the car door, I slowly stood up and forced a calm expression, politely refusing Noah’s offer to get me some medicine.
“You don’t look very well, Ms. Riley.” Noah’s brows furrowed slightly, a note of concern in his voice.
“It’s nothing. Just an old stomach problem.” Before he could leave, I weakly called after him, “Please, don’t tell Ethan about this.”
Noah paused briefly, then answered honestly, “Alpha’s been staying at headquarters in Nshire lately, taking care of business. He hardly gets involved in Voss Group’s daily operations anymore. Besides…”
He stopped for a second, a complicated look crossing his face. “The people he had watching over you were all pulled back two days ago.”
I forced a faint smile and lowered my eyes, pretending not to care. “I see. That’s good, then. It means I’m finally free.”
The moment I said those words, the pain in my heart became far stronger than the ache in my stomach.
So this was what it looked like when Ethan truly chose to let go. Even the people he had assigned to protect and watch over me were gone.
The freedom left me with nothing but a hollow emptiness that was difficult to bear.
Once I arrived at the office, I swallowed two painkillers and forced myself to attend the morning meeting.
Before it began, I ran into Alex in the hallway. He looked like he was in a rush, but he stopped as soon as he saw me. “Lianne, the company has confirmed the new director. They’ll start soon and work with you on the handover,” he said.
After a regretful sigh, he continued, “It’s a pity you chose to give up the credit for the jewelry project. Should I speak to Alpha and see if your name can be added back?”
“No,” I cut him off without hesitation. Then I said coldly, “Anything I do is no longer Ethan’s business. I don’t care about the project or the credit.”
Alex remained outside the conference room, disappointment written all over his face.
