Chapter 738:
Abandoning every excuse, he looked at me and admitted plainly, “Lianne, I did it on purpose. I fell for you the moment I saw you. Those questions were only an excuse to get close to you. Would you give me a chance to get to know you?”
Seeing the confidence and determination in his eyes, I answered with a cold, mocking smile. “Didn’t Alex tell you?”
He stared at me, curious. “I’m married,” I said calmly.
I was no longer wearing the wedding ring, and the man I married had sold the house we once shared. Even so, my heart was still Ethan’s.
Damien stood frozen in place.
Without paying him any more attention, I looked at the calendar on my desk. The bold red circle reminded me that only seven days remained before my departure — and just seventeen days remained until the trial that would finally seek justice for my late father.
I watched Damien walk away with slumped shoulders, then quietly looked away. The word “married” was an unbreakable shield, one that had crushed every unrealistic hope he had been holding onto.

Without realizing it, I was becoming more and more like Ethan. I had learned his direct, ruthless way of turning people down. It was better to shut things down immediately than get trapped in endless entanglement.
As the workday came to an end, I had just finished the last report on my desk when Frank called.
“Lianne, my girlfriend wants to meet my friends. She was wondering if you and Tracy could join us for dinner tonight,” Frank said brightly, sounding like a man who had just fallen in love.
“Tracy’s pregnancy is quite advanced now, so it’s difficult for her to go out. I’ll have to decline too,” I replied, keeping my voice as natural as possible. “I’m heading to the law firm later to finalize the remaining details of the lawsuit. Please give my regards to your girlfriend, Frank.”
Frank understood and didn’t push. “Alright, I won’t keep you. If you need any help with the case, just let me know. You don’t have to handle everything by yourself.”
After ending the call, I hailed a taxi and headed for Tim’s office. My heart pounded uncontrollably the entire ride.
I wanted to ask Tim whether Ethan’s name was on the list of people attending the hearing. It could be the last chance I would ever have to see him before I left this city forever.
But the moment I reached his office door, a thought stopped me cold. Ethan had hired Tim. That meant anything I said or did could easily find its way back to him. If I revealed even the slightest concern, or asked where he was, all the determination and distance I had worked so hard to build would fall apart.
I could not let him know that I still cared.
“Lianne?” Tim looked up, clearly surprised to see me. “Is there something else you need to go over?”
“No… nothing.” I forced a smile while my fingernails pressed deep into my palms. “I just wanted to make sure there isn’t anything else in the trial process I need to review. If everything’s ready, I’ll be on my way.”
