Chapter 752:
Ivy stood up, and tears immediately poured down her cheeks. She insisted she’d had no choice, deliberately playing the pitiful, broken victim, putting on a show of regret in hopes that the judge would spare her life.
When Rola rose to her feet, however, her face remained calm. She simply read the statement her lawyer had written for her, her voice flat and emotionless, as if this trial were nothing more than another meaningless event in her otherwise uneventful life.
The confidence in her eyes, the certainty that she would get off scot-free, made me press my nails painfully into my palms.
“This court is adjourned. The verdict will be delivered at a later date.” The judge brought down the gavel, and I rose stiffly and gave a respectful bow.
As we left the courtroom, Tim stayed close behind me, refusing to let the matter go. “Lianne, Rola’s testimony was full of inconsistencies. If the verdict doesn’t satisfy us, we need to seriously consider filing an appeal. I’m certain…”
“Tim.” I stopped walking and turned to face him, my eyes cold and firm. “I’ve already told you. No matter what the verdict is this time, I’m done. I’m exhausted, and my father deserves to rest in peace.”
I stepped out of the courthouse, and the bright sunlight immediately poured over me. I lifted my head and looked at the endless blue sky. It was so clear and boundless that it almost didn’t seem real. Beneath that peaceful sky, the ugliness of the world, its injustice, cruelty, and bloodshed, seemed to dissolve.
Compared to the weight of the law, the pain and resentment I carried in my heart suddenly seemed so small.

Just as my thoughts began to drift, a familiar voice called out from the crowd. “Lianne!”
I turned and saw Tracy making her way toward me, one hand supporting her noticeably pregnant belly. She carried a bouquet of bright sunflowers, tiny beads of sweat shimmering on her forehead. “I wasn’t going to miss a day like this.”
Before I could say anything, she wrapped me in a warm embrace. Even through our clothes, I could feel her comforting warmth slowly melting my cold heart.
At that moment, every bit of hurt, anger, and loneliness I had forced myself to endure throughout the trial came crashing down like a broken dam.
I grabbed the back of Tracy’s shirt as tears streamed down my cheeks, soaking into the sunflower petals.
“Thank you… thank you, Tracy,” I whispered through my sobs.
Seeing my best friend standing beside me, offering nothing but support and comfort, finally eased the burden I had carried in my heart for more than ten years, if only for a little while.
As we walked down the courthouse steps, I saw Tracy’s car parked close by. Out of habit, she headed straight for the driver’s seat. My heart skipped a beat, and I quickly reached out to catch her arm and gently pull her back.
“Hey, you’re carrying a baby right now. It’s already impressive that you drove all the way here. Let me drive.” I took the keys from her hand before she had a chance to object.
