Chapter 769:
Ever since Ethan and I had crossed paths, the Alpha who had once stood at the very top, unmatched by anyone, had bled and come close to death time and time again because of me.
If I had never shown up in his life, he would still be that untouchable Alpha standing above everyone else. He wouldn’t be lying in his own blood, fighting to stay alive.
I stayed rooted to the spot, my legs as heavy as stone.
All I could do was watch as they carried him away, until his blood-soaked body disappeared from my sight.
I had no idea how much time had passed before Jeremy arrived. His expression was grim, every step filled with urgency.

“Lianne!” The color drained from his face when he saw my blood-covered hands and blank stare. He hurried over and grabbed my shoulders. “Are you okay? Are you hurt? Talk to me!”
Only after checking me over several times and confirming that the blood covering me was Ethan’s did he finally let out a breath of relief. I only had a few minor scrapes. After a brief hesitation, he said, “Come with me. I’ll take you to the hospital so they can examine you. And… you can see Ethan while we’re there.”
“I’m not going.” I slowly shook my head, my voice rough with emotion. “They’re only small cuts. They’ll heal soon. It’s nothing serious.”
Jeremy rubbed a hand over his face, his fear giving way to irritation. “Have you lost your mind? You actually confronted Rola by yourself? If Ethan hadn’t shown up when he did, you wouldn’t be alive right now!”
After a brief pause, he added seriously, “Don’t tell Tracy about any of this. Her pregnancy is in its late stage, and she can’t handle this kind of shock. If she goes into labor early, it’ll cause even bigger problems.”
“I understand,” I answered softly. “Please keep it from her.”
A stifling silence settled between us. In the end, I couldn’t hold back my worry. My voice trembled as I whispered, “How… how is Ethan?”
“He’s going to be okay,” Jeremy replied with a weary sigh. “The wound is deep, but it missed his heart. Melisa is on her way. You know how fast werewolves recover. He’ll be back on his feet soon.”
Jeremy went on to tell me that many of the pack elders were gathered around Ethan’s bedside, keeping watch. The atmosphere in the hospital was tense, and now wasn’t the right time for me to show up. Still, he promised that once everyone had left later that night, he could sneak me in to see him.
“I’m not going,” I said again, my tone flat. “I nearly got him killed again. I can’t face him. I wouldn’t even know what to say.”
“Lianne, how much longer are you going to run from him?” Jeremy let out another weary sigh, seeing straight through me. “Do you really think staying away makes this easier for him? He’s carrying far more pain than you can imagine.”
