Chapter 771:
Ethan had only just been wheeled out of surgery. Worn down by days of nonstop travel and the massive amount of blood he had lost, he was fast asleep.
Rola had been sent back to the Voss estate to recover after her emotional outburst, leaving Melisa standing alone at the end of the hallway.
I could see the conflict written all over Jeremy’s face. He wanted to stay with me, but Tracy could go into labor at any time, and he was equally worried about her.
“You should go home,” I said, wiping my face, trying to maintain my composure. “Tracy needs you. I’ll stay here until Ethan wakes up.”
Once Jeremy had left, I turned to Melisa, who had been quietly waiting.
Her piercing gaze traveled over me, filled with disappointment and judgment.
“Alpha hasn’t stopped calling your name since he lost consciousness,” Melisa said, her tone calm but cutting. “And yet, you only just showed up. Lianne, I truly believed the two of you loved each other. But now I realize the only person you care about is yourself. Ethan gave up everything for you. He even turned against his own family. Tell me, are you really worthy of that kind of love?”
I leaned against the cold wall. The lingering haze from the alcohol dulled my thoughts, leaving me unable to say a single word in my own defense.
“You’re right.” A bitter smile tugged at my lips as my dry eyes stung. “I’m not worthy of him. I only came to make sure he was still alive. Now that I know he’s safe, I’ll leave.”
“You…” Melisa stared at me in disbelief, clearly unprepared for my blunt answer. After a brief pause, she rushed forward and blocked my path. “Have you lost your mind? He loves you with everything he has! If one day he stops loving you and falls for someone else, you’ll spend the rest of your life regretting this!”

The hopeless look on my face seemed to melt some of her anger. Her voice softened as she urged, “Just go inside. What he needs most right now isn’t medicine. It’s you. Since you’ve come, stay with him as his mate.”
After Melisa walked away, I stood outside Ethan’s hospital room for what felt like forever.
At last, my shaky hand reached for the handle and slowly pushed the heavy door open.
Ethan lay silently on the spotless white sheets. Thick bandages covered his upper body, faint stains of blood already beginning to seep through them.
His signature scent of crisp, cold cedar was very faint now.
I softened my footsteps and held my breath, afraid even the slightest sound would interrupt his rare, much-needed rest.
But his senses were far too sharp.
Careful as I was, the moment I reached his bedside, his long eyelashes fluttered, and his eyes gradually opened.
At first, his bloodshot eyes were clouded with confusion. Then, the moment he recognized me, they softened with a warmth so deep it made my heart ache.
“Lianne, you came…”
His voice was rough and dry, each word scraping painfully against my heart.
I stood frozen, caught between countless emotions.
