Chapter 772:
A faint, peaceful smile crossed his face. With great effort, he slowly reached toward me, as though he wanted to touch my hand. His voice was barely audible. “I… dreamed that you came to see me. Am I… still dreaming?”
The moment he said those words, tears ran down my face.
“Yes,” I whispered between sobs. “You’re dreaming.”
I looked at the hand reaching for me, an IV taped to it. Fear gripped my heart at the thought that any movement might tear the stitches on his chest.
I cautiously stretched out my hand to lightly brush against his fingers. But the instant our hands met, he clasped mine with desperate force, holding on as though I were the only thing keeping him alive.
“Mm…” A pained groan escaped his lips, and his brows drew together.
I saw bright red blood spread across the white bandages wrapped around his chest.
“Ethan! Have you lost your mind? Let go!” Panic surged through me. My body shook as I turned toward the door. “I’m getting the doctor. Don’t move…”
“Don’t leave…” Ignoring the searing pain from his wound, he reached out with his other hand and wrapped it tightly around my wrist.

The veins on the back of his hand stood out from the effort. His bloodshot eyes stayed fixed on mine, filled with a desperation that broke my heart. “Lianne… don’t go. Please.”
I stayed rooted beside his bed, staring at the sweat covering his forehead from the pain. My eyes burned as I struggled to keep my tears from falling.
I tightened my hold on his hand, trying to calm him. “I’m not leaving, I promise. Just lie down and stop straining yourself.”
Seeing him so weak and broken destroyed the last of my composure. I broke into sobs. “Why do you always do this, Ethan? Why? I’m not worth it. None of this is worth sacrificing yourself for! Why do you keep risking your life for me, again and again?”
His gaze softened as he looked at me, his pale lips trembling. He sounded hoarse but firm. “You’re my fated mate… Protecting you is an instinct carved into my very bones.”
“But our mate bond was broken long ago!” I cried, my emotions spiraling out of control. “Ethan, our relationship should never have happened in the first place. Without me, you’d still be the revered Alpha of the pack, living the life you were meant to live. Please… let yourself go, and let me go too.”
It was as though he hadn’t heard a single word. Staring at the ceiling, he spoke slowly, with unwavering determination. “I’ll give you the justice you deserve. I’ll make sure Rola answers for everything she did to you and your father.”
“I don’t want justice!” I shook my head frantically as tears poured down my cheeks. “Ethan, withdraw the appeal. She’s your grandmother. If you have a hand in sending her to prison, what will the pack think of you? They’ll call you a traitor. Your reputation will be ruined. I can’t let that happen… I can’t bear the thought of everyone loathing you because of me.”
