Chapter 776:
I had barely eaten for days. My body was so weak I could hardly stay on my feet. The impact drove my forehead straight into the wound on his chest, one that had only just begun to heal. He gasped in pain.
Before I could gather my thoughts, Ethan’s lips crashed onto mine.
It wasn’t a kiss. It was punishment. A violent release of everything he had been holding back. A desperate, obsessive assault that left my lips bruised.
His hand gripped the back of my head, refusing to let me go. His tongue forced its way past my lips, carrying his scent mixed with the faint metallic taste of blood.
The pain brought tears rushing to my eyes. I instinctively tried to push him away, but the moment my hands pressed against his shirt, I felt a chilling dampness beneath my palms.
It was blood.
The wound on his chest had opened again.
I froze, afraid to make even the smallest movement.
My deep concern for his well-being overwhelmed every thought I’d had of taking my own life.
At last, he pulled away from my lips. He rested his forehead against mine, struggling to catch his breath. In the dark, his bloodshot eyes blazed with fierce emotion, and his hoarse voice cut straight through my heart.

“Why did you stop fighting me, Lianne? Don’t you hate me? Don’t you want to be free? Then push me away!”
My lips parted, but no words came out.
“You can’t do it, can you?” He held me even tighter, paying no attention to the burning pain in his chest, his arms locking around me as though he wanted to make me part of himself forever. “Tell me, what were you thinking? Were you really going to jump? Did you want me to spend the rest of my life haunted by the sight of you dying?”
Every bit of determination I had struggled to hold together broke beneath his relentless questions.
I broke down in his arms. My tears soaked into his shirt, and my body trembled as I whispered through my sobs, “Ethan… I think something is really wrong with me. I can’t control it anymore… I can’t stop those thoughts. I’m so tired. I’m just… so tired…”
The harshness disappeared from his eyes in an instant, replaced by something heartbreakingly tender.
His trembling hand stroked my hair again and again as he spoke with certainty. “It’s alright. I’ll help you get better. No matter how long it takes, I’ll make sure you get better.”
Ignoring the blood seeping from his reopened wound, he lifted me into his arms and carefully carried me away from the rooftop.
“Our children are here. They’re waiting downstairs. And the house we once lived in… I’m not selling it anymore.”
I stared at him in surprise. “Why? I thought you said…”
He stopped beneath the dim glow of a motion-sensor light and looked down at me, his eyes filled with an aching devotion that tugged at my heartstrings.
After a long silence, he finally answered in a quiet voice, “Because I can’t do it. Lianne, I can’t let go of anything that has to do with you.”
