Chapter 781:
As he peeled a shrimp for Tracy, he glanced at me with a grin. “Lianne, your son is going to have to work extra hard in the future. My little princess hasn’t even been born yet, and I bet there are already plenty of boys waiting in line to court her. We can’t let him take her away too easily.”
I tried to immerse myself in their cheerful conversation, clinging to the warmth of their everyday family life as though it could somehow keep my crumbling world from falling apart.
Even so, I couldn’t help feeling like an outsider. Frustration washed over me again and again in waves.
“Are you feeling sick?” Ethan noticed how tense I was and leaned closer, his warm breath brushing lightly against my ear.
“I’m fine.” I shook my head, trying to dismiss his concern, then forced myself to rejoin Jeremy and Tracy’s conversation.
I kept reminding myself that I couldn’t continue looking so exhausted and miserable. If I did, I would end up ruining what should have been a pleasant dinner for everyone.
With that in mind, I forced a smile and joined their discussion about their unborn daughter.
Halfway through the meal, Ethan excused himself and went to the restroom, leaving his phone on the table. A few moments later, the screen lit up. It kept buzzing over and over.

I had no intention of looking through his messages. I simply assumed he was receiving a flood of work-related notifications.
Yet as I watched the screen repeatedly light up, an inexplicable bitterness slowly filled my heart.
My constant exhaustion and emotional instability had cost him. He’d put off too much of his own work because of me.
For just a moment, a dark thought crossed my mind. If I disappeared, Ethan would go back to being his decisive, confident, proud self. He wouldn’t have to spend every day worrying that something might happen to me.
I became lost in my thoughts.
“Lianne? Lianne!”
Tracy called my name several times before I finally came back to myself. Just then, my own phone began to ring.
When I looked at the screen, an unexpected name popped up. It was Melisa.
Worried that Tracy might notice something strange, I immediately stood and walked toward a quiet corner of the terrace before answering.
“Lianne, is Ethan with you?” Melisa asked urgently. “I’ve been trying to reach him, but I can’t get through. He left the hospital before his injuries had fully healed. That’s a silver poison wound, not an ordinary injury! Did you show him the medical precautions I sent you? He has to follow the proper wound-care procedures and get enough rest. Otherwise, he could suffer permanent damage!”
Only then did I understand that all those notifications lighting up Ethan’s phone earlier had been messages from Melisa.
When I returned to the table, Ethan also walked back from the restroom.
His eyes immediately followed mine to his phone. Without hesitation, he picked it up, unlocked the screen, and pushed it toward me.
Every message from Melisa was filled with medical reminders.
Don’t forget to take your medication on time. Make sure the wound doesn’t come into contact with water.
If you develop a fever, return to the hospital immediately.
Ethan’s responses, however, were short and mechanical. He mostly replied with an “Okay.”
