Chapter 782

Chapter 782:
There was no flirting, no unnecessary conversation, no attempt to prolong the exchange.
And yet, as I stared at the reminders filling the screen, I felt an inexplicable bitterness.
Ethan’s POV
Watching Lianne stare blankly at my phone screen made my heart ache.
I knew her too well.
There was no anger in her eyes. What I saw instead was a bitter kind of resignation, as if she had already begun giving up on herself. And that terrified me more than anything.
“If this is making you uncomfortable, I’ll delete Melisa’s number right now.” Without the slightest hesitation, I moved to delete the number in front of her.
“Don’t.” Lianne quickly reached out to stop me. “Ethan, don’t read too much into it. That’s not what I meant.”

I was afraid she was keeping her true feelings bottled up. Even more terrifying was the thought that she might use this as another reason to distance herself from me. So I quickly explained, “Melisa will be going abroad for further studies soon. She’s only worried about the injuries I’ve suffered recently and wants to make sure I recover properly without any lasting complications. That’s why we exchanged numbers. I swear, Lianne, there’s nothing else between us. It’s strictly professional.”
After hearing my explanation, Lianne’s expression stayed detached.
She forced a faint smile and said in a flat tone, “Then just listen to her advice and take care of yourself. Ethan, you’re free to do whatever you want. I don’t want to interfere in your affairs, and I have no right to.”
Free to do whatever I wanted?
Those words left a bitter taste in my mouth.
That was the last thing I wanted. If I could, I would keep myself tied to her for the rest of our lives. I wanted nothing but her. I would do whatever it took to keep her beside me and make sure she never had the chance to leave.
The freedom she spoke of felt nothing like freedom to me. It felt like exile.
After Jeremy and Tracy left, Lianne sat quietly in the passenger seat. In a voice so soft I could barely hear it, she asked if she could postpone her appointment with the psychologist.
I looked at her exhausted eyes. I wanted to refuse, but the words never made it past my lips.
I would give in to anything she wanted, as long as she didn’t disappear from my life and stayed where I could see her. If she needed time to pull herself together, I would wait, however long it took.
On the drive back, I kept checking on her condition.
Her face grew paler with every passing moment, and she looked so frail that she reminded me of a flower slowly losing its life. Even her breathing had grown shallow.
The anxiety I felt refused to ease as my hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“Would you be okay if we had the doctor come to the apartment and examine you?” I asked cautiously.
