Chapter 783:
“I’m fine… I’m just a little carsick,” she murmured, eyes closed, her voice weak and breathy. “I’ll be better after I get some rest.”
But I couldn’t shake the uneasiness that had settled over me.
And just as I feared, before we even reached the apartment, Lianne’s body, which had been leaning back against the seat, suddenly went limp.
“Lianne!” I gasped in panic.
Ethan’s POV
The instant I saw Lianne collapse, my heart lurched. I hit the brakes and brought the car to a screeching stop.
Watching her go completely limp and fall unconscious made it feel as if the blood in my veins had frozen.

I rushed her to the nearest hospital, then immediately called Jeremy.
The doctor’s diagnosis was clear. Her body had reached its limit after too many sleepless nights, poor nutrition, and constant exhaustion.
But as I stood beside her bed, my eyes fixed on the IV line taped to the back of her hand, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something far worse was happening. It wasn’t just her body giving out. Gradually, she was losing the will to live, and that terrified me more than anything.
“Calm down, Ethan.” Jeremy gave my shoulder a light pat, trying to ease the suffocating silence that filled the room.
Then he added, teasing, “If you’re worried she’ll run away or refuse treatment again, why not be a little tougher? You’re an Alpha. You have more than enough power to keep her with you and make sure she follows the doctor’s orders.”
Be tougher?
The thought had crossed my mind a few times.
I had the power and the resources. I could keep her somewhere luxurious, a beautiful prison all the same, surround her with the finest doctors, and make sure she recovered whether she wanted to or not.
But I could never make myself do it.
Nothing scared me more than seeing fear in her eyes. I couldn’t bear the thought of her looking at me with panic and helplessness, as though I were a monster.
The moment she showed even a hint of fear toward me, every bit of determination, every plan, every shred of composure I had would fall apart.
“You just can’t do it, can you?” Jeremy teased, looking at my weary eyes and shaking his head.
I looked at her peaceful face as she slept in the hospital bed and quietly admitted to myself that he was right.
At that moment, nothing else mattered. Other people’s judgment, my family’s pride, even my own reputation all seemed meaningless compared to her.
In this life, I had no desire to become some mighty king. All I wanted was to reach into the darkness where Lianne had fallen and pull her back.
Lianne’s POV
This time, I sank much deeper into a coma. My mind seemed to suddenly shut down, dropping me into a dark, bottomless pit.
When I finally woke up, my thoughts were still lingering on the drive back to my apartment with Ethan.
I instinctively tried to push myself up, but a sharp pain shot through the back of my hand.
