Chapter 784:
“Don’t move!” Ethan’s worried voice came from beside me.
I looked down and saw an IV needle in each hand. Because I had moved so abruptly, a thin stream of blood had flowed into the clear tubing.
Ethan gently but firmly eased me back onto the pillow with his large, warm hand.
His eyes stayed fixed on the blood in the IV line. He barely seemed to breathe until the flowing medicine had pushed every trace of it back into my vein. Only then did he let out a long, shaky sigh. The tightness in his face eased, though he still looked deeply exhausted.
“You passed out in the car because your blood sugar dropped too low, and your body was completely worn out,” he said in a low, raspy voice as he sat beside my bed.
“What time is it?” I asked, staring blankly at the ceiling. My body felt strangely light, as though I were drifting through a dream.

“It’s seven in the evening,” he answered.
He stood up, poured a cup of warm milk, and carefully brought it to my lips.
My stomach twisted with discomfort, and I had no desire to eat or drink anything. But the weariness on his face and his tender care made it impossible for me to turn him down.
I slowly took a few small sips of milk. The sharp smell of antiseptic lingered in the air, making me feel an overwhelming sense of discomfort.
“I want to go back to my apartment.” I set the cup down, unable to hide the plea in my voice. “I don’t like being here.”
“Okay, we’ll leave,” he agreed without hesitation. Then he added softly, “But I can’t let you live by yourself anymore. Lianne, please don’t fight me on this, okay?”
He spoke softly, like he was coaxing a child.
A bitter smile tugged at my lips. “Ethan, I’m not a child. You don’t have to speak to me like that.”
To my surprise, he smiled faintly, a teasing glint in his eyes. “To be honest, our children are much easier to deal with than you.”
He took out his phone, opened his photo gallery, and played a video for me.
On the screen, Ruby ran through the garden, chasing butterflies with carefree laughter.
Not far away, Silas sat quietly, completely absorbed in a Lego set he was putting together. Now and then, he glanced toward the camera, his eyes, so much like Ethan’s, shining with pure, unfiltered joy.
The video was a glimpse into their daily life, and every scene was filled with such warmth and affection that it brought tears to my eyes.
As I watched Ethan patiently spending time with the children, a bittersweet ache spread through my heart.
This was the kind of warmth, the kind of family, I had longed for all my life but never had.
“Ethan…” My eyes stayed on the screen as my voice quivered. “Have you ever… felt like giving up on me?”
