Chapter 790:
The psychologist gave a faint smile, his eyes lingering on our intertwined hands. “Medicine can only help so much. The greatest key to recovery is the patient’s own mental strength. Ms. Riley, the love and devotion he has for you are your strongest force for healing.”
On the drive back, I gazed out the car window, watching the city disappear behind us as my thoughts wandered.
That familiar feeling of drifting away from reality returned. I felt anxious, and without realizing it, tightened my grip on Ethan’s hand.
“Will I really get better?” I asked in a low voice.
“You will,” he answered firmly, lifting my hand and pressing a kiss to it.
After a brief silence, I spoke again, my voice calm but resolute. “Ethan, let’s go home. Back to… our home.”
He stared at me for a second, then his face broke into a dazzling smile.
He must have believed I was thinking about Ruby and Silas, that I had finally let go of my resentment and was ready to embrace our family again.
“Okay. We’ll head back right away. The kids are going to be so happy to see you,” he said excitedly, before telling the driver to turn the car around.
I forced a faint smile, but I felt so hollow and empty inside.
The truth was, I wasn’t looking forward to any joyful reunion.

I didn’t know whether my illness had stolen my ability to feel, but being a mother and a mate now felt like an unbearable weight pressing down on me.
The only reason I wanted to go back was that I was exhausted. I didn’t want to keep wandering outside any longer.
All I could do was pretend to be normal, making sure he never noticed the emptiness inside me.
My only hope lay in the bottle of pills inside my bag. I silently prayed they would work just as the psychologist had promised, quiet the turmoil in my mind, and turn me back into someone… someone he could finally be at peace with.
Lianne’s POV
When I stepped into the familiar villa again, the faint scent of fir trees greeted me.
“Mommy! Mommy! You’re finally home!”
Ruby and Silas came running toward me, crying out happily as they threw themselves into my arms, their little hands gripping the bottom of my shirt. In their chirpy voices, they told me about everything that had upset them and how much they had missed me while I was gone.
I raised my hand and gently ran my fingers through Ruby’s soft hair.
As a mother reunited with her children after enduring such painful separation and loss, I should have been overwhelmed with emotion. I should have cried and held them close.
But my heart was completely numb. No matter how eagerly the children reached for me with their happiness and longing, I couldn’t feel a thing.
I forced the corners of my lips upward, forming a stiff smile, but I couldn’t even make myself tell them I had missed them too.
