Chapter 809:
“Ethan,” I began, as casually as I could. “What was so important that Melisa needed to see you last night?”
I tried my best to sound relaxed instead of suspicious, but the uneasiness inside me refused to disappear.
Taking a quiet breath, I continued, “Honestly… I’m already feeling much better. I don’t think I should keep asking her to treat me anymore. I don’t want to keep causing trouble for you, and I don’t want…”
I stopped there. I didn’t have the courage to admit that I simply didn’t want Ethan seeing Melisa so often anymore.
For once, the man who rarely denied me anything fell silent.
His fingers tightened slightly around his spoon before he answered in a calm but unwavering voice, “Your recovery comes first. She’s the only one who fully understands your condition. Please don’t think too much about it.”
A dull ache settled inside my chest, but I forced myself to swallow it and quietly nodded.
Sensing the change in my mood, Ethan set his cup on the table and looked at me with unusual seriousness. “Lianne, promise me something. Until this is over, don’t meet Melisa by yourself, and don’t answer any calls from her. If she contacts you, tell me immediately.”
I blinked in confusion. “Why?”
“Just trust me.” He offered nothing more, yet the concern in his eyes spoke louder than any explanation could.

Remembering my promise to stop shutting him out and start trusting him again, I nodded without questioning him further.
After breakfast, I drove to the hospital alone.
Tracy had only recently given birth, and I knew she still needed plenty of rest. I left the children at the villa, worried they might be too energetic around a recovering mother and her newborn.
When I stepped into her hospital room, the lively, outspoken Tracy I knew looked completely drained. She rested weakly against the headboard, dark circles beneath her eyes, exhaustion written across her pale face. Even so, her gaze never wandered from the tiny baby sleeping peacefully in the crib nearby.
“Lianne… you’re here.” Her voice sounded weak.
As I reached toward the baby, Tracy instinctively stretched out a hand to stop me.
A second later, she withdrew it awkwardly. “Sorry… I just can’t stop watching her. I’m scared someone will take her away.”
Looking at her reddened eyes and the fragile little girl sleeping beside her, emotion swelled inside me.
Somewhere along the way, we had changed from carefree young women searching for our place in the world into mothers whose hearts revolved entirely around their children.
Sometimes it still felt unreal.
Taking her hand gently in mine, I smiled. “Tracy, I’ve finally made my decision. I’m going to let go of everything I’ve been holding against Rola. I don’t want to keep pushing Ethan away.”
Her eyes widened with excitement. “You mean it?”
