Chapter 811:
Half-asleep, I felt the clean scent of cedar surrounding me. I knew Ethan was back. I instinctively wrapped my arms around his neck, greedily soaking in the comforting heat of his embrace.
“So you’re awake.” Ethan’s low voice sounded beside my ear, rough with exhaustion.
I nestled deeper against him, drawing courage from the safety of his arms before finally speaking. “Ethan… I’ve decided. I want us to renew our mate bond. And I’ll… withdraw the case against Rola too.”
His body tensed, and I hurried to explain. “I’m not doing this to satisfy you or your pack. Getting sick made me understand how easily life can disappear. I don’t want to keep exhausting myself over who’s right and who’s wrong anymore. I only want a quiet, peaceful life with you and the children.”
Dropping my eyes, I continued honestly, “But I still haven’t forgiven what she did. Even after we restore our bond, I may never be comfortable around the rest of the pack. That would leave you stuck between us. Would you really be able to accept that?”
His eyes lit up immediately with overwhelming happiness, and he pulled me into such a tight embrace it almost felt as though he wished he could fuse me into himself forever.
Yet beneath that overwhelming joy, I noticed something else. A tiny flash of uncertainty crossed his face before disappearing.
“Lianne, hearing you say that makes me happier than you know.” He kissed my forehead, though a trace of hesitation lingered beneath his gentle voice. “But as for renewing our bond… let’s wait a little longer, alright? Your recovery comes first. Everything else can happen afterward.”
Still clinging to his neck, I stared at him, unable to understand.
This was everything he’d been hoping for, wasn’t it? Then why was he stepping back now that I was finally the one reaching toward him?

That familiar feeling of being shut out from the truth quietly crept over me again.
I had believed that once I suggested restoring our bond, Ethan would be eager to take me straight to the ceremony and make us mates again. Instead, that brief hesitation and careful avoidance extinguished the courage I’d struggled so hard to gather, as though someone had emptied a bucket of freezing water over me.
Fear tightened around my chest, and my fingers unconsciously clenched the fabric of his shirt.
“Is it really only because I’m still recovering?” I searched his dark eyes, desperately looking for even the smallest sign of what he was hiding. “Ethan… have you changed your mind? Do you… not want me anymore?”
“Don’t overthink it.” He released a quiet sigh before gathering me tightly against him, holding me so close I could hear the steady beat of his heart. Resting his forehead against mine, he spoke softly, his warm breath brushing my face. “You’ll always be my one and only mate. I simply want you completely healthy first, so I can give you the most unforgettable wedding possible. I don’t want to rush things and leave you feeling shortchanged.”
The certainty in his words finally loosened the knot that had been squeezing my heart.
