Chapter 820:
Melisa wasn’t just another woman. Within the Thorn Pack, nearly everyone believed she should have been Luna. She had once been only a step away from officially becoming Ethan’s mate. Now she had a perfectly reasonable excuse to remain close to him through my medical treatment.
Anyone else would have been cut out of his life immediately for my sake. Only Melisa received endless exceptions. He refused to push her away. He refused to explain why.
I tried forcing my attention back to the reports on the monitor. The figures blurred together until they looked like meaningless symbols taunting me.
A short while later, the front door opened with a hurried click.
Ethan rushed inside, bringing the cold air with him. His tie had come loose, worry written plainly across his face.
“Why weren’t you answering?” he demanded.
He crossed the room in moments. Before I could respond, he wrapped both arms tightly around me.
His embrace was almost painful. My face pressed so firmly against him that the bridge of my nose ached. Still, he clung to me as though he feared I might disappear. His voice quivered with lingering fear. “Don’t scare me like that again, Lianne. I don’t know what I’d do.”

The warmth of his body mixed with the sweat left by his frantic drive home. The rigid tension inside me slowly dissolved.
No matter how hurt I felt, I simply couldn’t harden my heart against him. My arms gradually circled his back.
I buried my face in his chest and whispered, “I do trust you, Ethan. It’s her I can’t trust. She’s capable, she’s always by your side when your family needs help, and she belongs there so naturally. I can’t stop comparing myself to her.”
Drawing a shaky breath, I finally confessed the fear I’d buried deepest inside. “I’m afraid spending so much time with her will eventually change how you feel. I’m afraid I don’t have anything that could ever compete with someone everyone already approves of. And most of all… I’m afraid one day I’ll lose you.”
He gently held my cheeks and lifted my face until I met his eyes. Their intensity left no room for doubt.
“Lianne. There isn’t constant contact between Melisa and me, and there never will be feelings growing from it. From the day I chose my mate until now, that person has only ever been you. No one else will ever take your place.”
Seeing myself reflected in his eyes, looking exhausted and vulnerable, yet treasured beyond measure, broke down every wall I had built. The frustration. The sadness. The fear. They all quietly faded away.
I gave a small nod and rested against him once more. “Okay, I’ll trust you… one more time.”
The next day, as soon as I entered Voss Group’s headquarters, the crisp air-conditioning greeted me.
In the end, Ethan still worried too much to leave me alone with my thoughts. He had officially reinstated my position.
Noah escorted me directly to the executive floor. After opening the CEO’s office for me, he excused himself and quietly closed the doors behind him.
