Chapter 821:
Ethan stood before the towering windows, speaking on the phone. His charcoal vest emphasized his broad frame, while every movement carried the effortless authority of a man accustomed to giving orders.
I stayed silent, taking a seat on the sofa, and found myself watching him without realizing it.
The instant he finished the call and faced me, every trace of his professional indifference disappeared.
He came over immediately, settled beside me, and smiled as he casually brushed my hair with familiar affection.
“We’ve got a project meeting soon. I’m actually feeling a little anxious. I’ve been away from work for such a long time that I’m worried I won’t be able to keep up anymore,” I admitted honestly, nervously fidgeting with the edge of my shirt.
Lianne’s POV
Ethan let out a quiet laugh as he slipped his hand into mine. His thumb slowly brushed across the back of my hand while his deep, soothing voice eased my nerves. “What are you so worried about? You’re my mate. That means everything under the Voss Group belongs to you too. If anyone dares question your place there, I’ll have them clear out their desks before the day is over.”
His unexpectedly sweet reassurance instantly warmed my cheeks. Embarrassed, I turned my face away, only for my attention to fall on the document he placed in my hands. It was my employment contract.

I opened it and scanned through the pages. The employment period immediately caught my eye, making me frown. “Only one year? Why?”
Instead of answering, Ethan silently urged me to keep reading.
Near the bottom, printed in much smaller text, was a special clause. Party B reserves the unrestricted right to renew this contract indefinitely at their own discretion.
I blinked in surprise before glancing back at him with an amused smile. “You’re really being this generous? Aren’t you worried I’ll collect my paycheck for a year and disappear?”
The smile on Ethan’s face softened. Looking directly into my eyes, he answered with complete honesty, “I am. More than you know.” His voice grew quieter, carrying a vulnerability I rarely heard. “But I don’t want contracts or obligations to keep you beside me anymore, Lianne. I only want you to stay because you truly choose me.”
He paused, then gave a bitter little laugh. “When it comes to you, I’ve never known how to make you feel free. I’m selfish where you’re concerned. I can’t let you go… and I don’t want to.”
His confession tightened something deep inside my chest.
For years, I had hidden behind false strength, always choosing retreat whenever life became painful. Meanwhile, Ethan had quietly stood behind me all along, patiently accepting every stubborn decision I made.
He had endured far more than I ever realized.
“I’ll work hard and help carry some of your burden,” I promised sincerely.
Yet even as I spoke, I couldn’t help feeling powerless. Ethan always prepared everything in advance. There seemed to be hardly anything left for me to do for him.
