Chapter 829:
The moment I answered, a wave of noise flooded through the speaker. Amid the commotion, I occasionally caught Philip’s raised voice. Ethan himself sounded calm and collected, just as he always did, but I knew him too well. Beneath that controlled tone was a faint tremor that even he probably hadn’t noticed.
“Ethan,” I said gently, softening my voice, “just focus on what’s happening there. Don’t carry everything on your shoulders. No matter what happens, none of this is your fault. Everything’s fine at home. Ruby and Silas are already asleep.”
After ending the call, I immediately contacted Noah and asked him to bring several thick cashmere coats from the house to the hospital.
Ethan still hadn’t fully recovered from everything his body had endured before, and hospitals were always unbearably cold. I was worried he wouldn’t be able to take it.
That night, I never made it back to the bedroom. Instead, I curled up beneath a blanket on the sofa, tossing and turning as countless thoughts washed over me like relentless waves.
It wasn’t until nearly four in the morning that exhaustion finally dragged me into a restless sleep.
The next morning, I forced myself to act as though everything was normal. After getting Ruby and Silas ready and sending them off to school, I reminded Noah again and again to keep me informed about anything happening at the hospital.

Only then did I drive to the office to finish the remaining work on the international project.
The sleepless night had left my head throbbing, each pulse feeling like tiny needles piercing my temples. Even after sitting at my desk, I couldn’t focus. My eyes kept drifting away from the financial reports spread before me.
It wasn’t until my phone buzzed with a message from Ethan reminding me to eat breakfast that a small warmth finally seeped into my weary heart.
I had just stepped out of the company building, hadn’t even replied to his text, when a hauntingly familiar voice sounded behind me.
“Lianne. It’s been a long time.”
I turned around. Melisa was standing beneath the shade of a nearby tree. She was dressed much more casually than usual, giving her a softer appearance, but the bruises peeking above her collar and the thick bandages wrapped around her wrist stood out far too clearly to ignore.
Perhaps I stared a little too openly. She smiled indifferently and gestured toward her injuries. “Don’t worry. It’s nothing serious. Just a little accident.” She paused, then added with a faint smile, “Actually, I should be thanking Ethan. If he hadn’t shown up when he did, I probably wouldn’t even be here talking to you.”
My heart skipped a beat.
Ethan saved her?
“He even arranged bodyguards to protect me around the clock.” Melisa took a few slow steps closer, her voice carrying a barely concealed note of pride. “He said I’m extremely important to him right now, and nothing can be allowed to happen to me.”
I didn’t know what had really happened between them. But no one understood Ethan better than I did. He wasn’t someone who offered kindness without reason, much less assigned personal bodyguards to his former fiancée when he knew perfectly well how uncomfortable her presence made me.
