Chapter 832:
He reached across the table, gently brushing his fingertips along my cheek as he spoke in a low, soothing voice. “I just want to sleep for a while,” he murmured. “I want to hold you while I rest. Don’t overthink it, okay?”
Embarrassed, I shot him an accusing look. Even so, I nodded.
His words about “sleep for a while” lingered in my mind long after we left the restaurant, leaving my face warm the entire drive home.
By the time we arrived, the blush still hadn’t faded.
With Ruby and Silas away at school, the house was unusually quiet. The silence made everything between us feel far more intimate.
“I… still have a little work to finish,” I blurted out, trying to hide my fluster. The moment we stepped inside, I opened my laptop and hurriedly began typing, pretending to focus on project updates instead of the pounding of my heart.

“Don’t wear yourself out.” At some point, Ethan had quietly walked up behind me. Bracing both hands on the desk, he loosely caged me between his arms.
His scent instantly surrounded me.
“I want this project to succeed,” I said without looking away from the screen, my voice slightly strained. “When I left before, everything happened so suddenly. There were too many loose ends. Now that I’m back, I owe it to everyone on the team to see it through properly.”
Ethan lowered his head until his chin rested lightly on my shoulder. His warm breath brushed against the side of my neck, sending a subtle shiver through me.
A quiet laugh rumbled from his chest. “Lianne,” he murmured, his deep voice rich and gentle, “you’re responsible when it comes to work… responsible to your team… responsible to our children.” He paused. “But when it comes to me, you’re the most irresponsible person I’ve ever met.”
My fingers froze above the keyboard.
“That night…” he continued softly, bringing up the night that had changed everything between us, “when we found each other again… were you really too drunk to know what was happening?” His voice grew even quieter. “Or… did you simply not want to push me away?”
Caught completely off guard, I closed the laptop and turned to face him. After taking a slow, steadying breath, I met his eyes.
“I won’t deny it. That night, I had a vague sense it was you,” I admitted, pausing to steady my voice. “I could have stopped it, I had every chance to. But in that moment, I couldn’t resist your warmth, that electric pull between us. I couldn’t bring myself to push you away. Still, I’d planned to leave that night behind me, to turn the page for good. But you were the one who kept closing in, step by step, refusing to let me go.”
Lianne’s POV:
I’d braced myself for Ethan to be angry when he found out I’d planned to leave him from the very beginning.
But instead, he just looked at me in silence. There wasn’t a trace of surprise on his face, only the quiet expression of someone who had already expected this answer.
