Chapter 839:
Because anything beat falling apart in silence, stepping so carefully around him while swallowing every bitter sting of jealousy the moment it dared to flare up.
Yet his deliberate silence, his refusal to meet my eyes, was like a tiny needle pricking the softest place in my heart, leaving an ache that refused to fade.
What secret lay behind Ethan’s careful walls? What truth was he guarding so fiercely that he’d let silence drive a wedge between us?
When Tim called, I was in my office reviewing the final batch of project data for the second time.
His composed voice came through the line. “Lianne, Ivy has submitted a request for a pre-execution visit, and she’s asked specifically for you. Per protocol, this is her last chance to exercise that right. Will you accept?”
I held the phone silently for several seconds.
Ivy—she had once wielded immense influence within the Thorn Pack, and she had played a part in my father’s death. She had already been sentenced to death, with no chance of appeal or clemency.
This meeting would be the last time our paths would ever cross in this lifetime.
“I accept,” I replied calmly.

The moment Ethan heard the news, he rushed to my office without a moment’s delay.
He shoved the door open so forcefully that it slammed against the wall with a heavy thud. His eyes were filled with unmistakable worry and disapproval.
“You can’t go.” He strode straight toward me, gripping my shoulders firmly, his voice leaving no room for argument. “Ivy’s lost her mind. There’s no telling what she’s capable of in her final moments. She only wants to see you so she can provoke you and hurt you one last time. Lianne, I won’t let you go.”
As I looked at the tension etched across his jaw, a warm ache spread quietly through my chest.
He was always trying to protect me, worrying so much that if he could, he’d tuck me safely beneath his wing and keep every danger far away.
“Ethan, let me go.” I covered his hand on my shoulder with my own, my voice soft but firm. “She’s already been sentenced to death. There’s no appeal, no last-minute save. This is the final time I’ll ever see her. She was part of what happened to my father, and I want to face her one last time—if only to finally release the hatred I’ve been holding onto.”
He remained silent for what felt like forever, the struggle in his eyes impossible to miss. At last, my stubborn determination won out, and he let out a reluctant sigh. “I’ll take you to the prison and wait outside.”
“No.” I shook my head without hesitation, my answer even firmer than his. “Ethan, you’ve already sacrificed too much and bent too many rules for me. I don’t want my emotions or my personal matters to become another burden you have to carry. Let Jeremy drive me. Tracy will be with me.”
“But…”
