Chapter 842:
He sat behind his desk, completely focused, while warm sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, softening his sharp features and wrapping him in a quiet, comforting glow. I held the phone up against the glass.
Ivy stared at it without blinking. Her eyes slowly filled with a longing that bordered on obsession.
Her fingers ghosted over Ethan’s reflection on the glass, her voice softening to a murmur. “He’s still so handsome… Lianne, look after him. Don’t let him suffer.”
I pulled my phone away and gave her a thin, mocking smile. “Don’t worry. If you’d never interfered, we would’ve found our happiness a long time ago. Honestly, even the death penalty feels too kind for what you’ve done.”

The guard stepped forward, quietly signaling that our time had come to an end.
The officers helped Ivy to her feet. Before turning away, she looked back at me one final time. To my surprise, a faint trace of tenderness shimmered in her clouded eyes, as though the hatred she’d clung to for so many years had finally loosened its grip.
“Lianne,” she murmured softly, gathering the last of her strength, “take good care of him.” After a brief pause, she added in an almost inaudible whisper, “Love him for me.”
Then she slowly turned around. The heavy shackles around her ankles scraped against the floor with every labored step as she made her way toward the iron door leading to death row.
A deafening clang echoed through the corridor as the door slammed shut behind her, leaving an oppressive silence hanging in its wake.
I remained seated, unable to move.
At that very moment, it felt as though every grudge, every resentment, and every tangled tie between us had finally been buried behind that closed door.
I’d always imagined this day would be different. I thought I would cry. I thought I would be consumed by anger. Or perhaps I would finally feel a long-awaited sense of relief.
Yet when the moment truly arrived, my heart was unexpectedly calm.
Slowly, I rose to my feet and walked out of the visitation room.
The bright sunlight pouring through the corridor made me instinctively narrow my eyes. Drawing in a slow, steady breath, I quietly locked away the weight of the past—along with Ivy’s final request—in the deepest corner of my heart, determined never to look back again.
“Dad…” I whispered under my breath. “It’s finally over.”
On the drive back from the prison, I rested my head against the window, absentmindedly watching the city’s streets and buildings drift by. My thoughts were tangled into a knot that refused to unravel.
After seeing Ivy for the very last time, the hatred, resentment, and grief that had weighed on my heart for years seemed to ebb away without me even realizing it, like a tide quietly retreating from the shore. All that remained was an unfamiliar emptiness and a strange sense of peace.
Tracy sat beside me, stealing worried glances every few seconds. She looked so tense that anyone would’ve thought she was the one carrying the burden. Obviously, she was afraid I’d break down in tears at any moment.
