Chapter 844:
A quiet chuckle escaped my lips. “I knew that would be your answer. After all, she’s the woman who murdered my father. She’s our enemy.”
Hearing the ease in my voice, Ethan finally seemed to relax.
His tone softened noticeably as he said, “Let’s have dinner together tonight. I’ve already booked a table. Tracy and Jeremy should come too.”
After the call ended, Jeremy suddenly turned the car around, explaining that he wanted to stop by the house to check on his daughter.
Tracy immediately puffed out her cheeks in protest. “You only ever think about our daughter! I’m sitting right here, and you don’t even spare me a second glance. What now? Ever since we had a baby, have I already fallen out of favor?”
Jeremy instantly looked like a deer caught in the headlights. Still keeping one hand on the steering wheel, he hurriedly reached for hers with the other, apologizing over and over again. “I’m sorry, sweetheart. That’s not what I meant. You’ll always be number one in my heart. Our daughter comes after you, I promise.”
Watching the two of them bicker so naturally brought an involuntary smile to my face.
Seeing my best friend living such a happy, cherished life filled me with a quiet sense of contentment. For me, that alone was more than enough.
When we arrived at the restaurant and had only just settled into our seats, my phone rang once again.
The moment I saw Tim’s name appear on the screen, a sense of unease stirred inside me. Excusing myself, I stepped outside before answering the call.

“Lianne, something unexpected has happened,” Tim said, his voice unusually solemn. “Ivy has changed her testimony. She’s withdrawn everything she confessed before and has shifted all the blame onto Rola.”
I froze where I stood, instinctively tightening my grip on the phone. For a brief moment, my mind went completely blank. “She… changed her testimony? But she already confessed everything, and the court has sentenced her to death. Why would she go through all this now?”
“The attorney believes the court will reopen the investigation,” Tim explained, unable to completely suppress the excitement in his voice. “If the evidence supports her new statement, Rola could face criminal prosecution. This may be the last opportunity we’ll ever have to bring Rola to justice.”
As I stood beneath the restaurant’s awning, the cool night breeze brushed gently against my face, carrying with it a faint chill.
I’d long believed I would never see the day when Rola was forced to answer for everything she’d done. I had already resigned myself to the thought that she’d escape punishment forever.
Yet fate had a funny way of working. Just when I’d stopped hoping, it quietly placed an unexpected opportunity right in front of me.
Even so, I refused to count my chickens before they hatched.
“I understand,” I replied after a moment of silence, my voice calm and steady. “No matter what happens in the end, I’ll face it calmly.”
