Chapter 846:
Even so, I couldn’t help speaking my mind. “She’s dying, and I can’t completely stop myself from feeling sorry for her. The way she looked at me before I left…” I paused. “It felt like she was begging for something. I keep thinking that if there were any small wish I could grant her before the end, maybe she’d leave this world with one less regret.”
The warmth in Ethan’s expression disappeared almost instantly. He slowly set his wine glass on the table, his face growing noticeably colder. “I can’t forgive her.” His voice was low, but every word carried unmistakable conviction. “Lianne, if she hadn’t interfered between us, we never would’ve lost those years together.” His jaw tightened. “I wouldn’t have missed watching our children grow up. Those are years I’ll never get back, regrets I’ll carry for the rest of my life.” He held my gaze without blinking. “As for where she ended up…” His voice turned even colder. “She has no one to blame but herself.”
Seeing the unwavering resolve in his eyes, I knew there was nothing more to say, so I quietly swallowed the rest of my thoughts.
After dinner, Ethan and I returned home together.
The villa had already fallen silent. The children were fast asleep, and only the warm glow from the wall lamps illuminated the house, wrapping every corner in a quiet sense of comfort.
Ethan leaned casually against the headboard with a book in his hands, reading in peaceful silence. After finishing my shower, I walked out of the bathroom, my eyes falling on his calm profile. For some reason, my heart suddenly softened.
I walked over, climbed onto the bed beside him, and sat quietly for a moment before finally gathering the courage to speak. “Ethan…” I hesitated briefly. “There’s something I’d like to talk to you about.”
He closed the book, set it aside, and turned toward me. His eyes were as gentle as ever. “What is it?”

“I’ve been thinking… maybe it’s time we started trying for another baby,” I said softly, my voice unusually tense as warmth crept across my cheeks. It felt a little embarrassing, considering Ethan had always been the one to bring up the subject before. “My mind is finally at peace, and my body’s completely recovered. I don’t want to leave myself with any more regrets. We’ve already lost so many years, and I want to make up for every moment we missed.”
I had imagined this would be one of those warm, unforgettable moments we’d look back on for years to come.
I thought he’d be just as excited as I was.
After all, he had always been the one mourning the years he’d missed with our children, wishing he could experience every step of being their father.
Yet instead of lighting up with joy, his expression suddenly stiffened.
His eyes drifted away from mine, and after a long silence, he finally murmured, “Your body’s only just recovered. Let’s give it a little more time. There’s no need to rush into having another baby.”
I froze. That wasn’t the response I’d been expecting.
“Ethan…” I searched his face, my heart inexplicably tightening. “Do you… not want another baby anymore?”
My voice trembled ever so slightly, though I didn’t even notice it myself.
He never answered. In fact, he wouldn’t even look at me.
